Playlist December 4 - 10

A live act and a girl band in this week's playlist...

1. Wust El Balad وسط البلد: I had the privilege of catching this funky Egyptian band in a live performance over the weekend. Imagine original Arabic material performed in a style that's a hybrid of Egyptian folk, Santana, Gypsy Kings, Barenaked Ladies... you name it! I was shocked to learn they don't have a recording contract while no-talent jerks and bimbos pollute the airwaves with their squawking! You can hear them on their website in the meantime.
2. What will the neighbors say? - Girls Aloud: Yes, folks.. Zaydoun the music snob has fallen - and fallen hard! - for a totally manufactured girl group from England. I read the great reviews in the British press and dismissed them as the usual over-excited ravings of rock critics. But thanks to iTunes, which allowed me to preview the album... I'm now hooked!
3. I Don't Care - The Roots: My search for this year's best rap/hip-hop song is over!
4. Fairuz: Random classics from the eternal legend, inspired by the raging debate on new blog احتجاج. I just put the iPod on random and let it go... رجعت الشتوية just came on. Very appropriate for this weather!
5. Band Aid 20 - Do They Know it's Christmas?: 20 years after the cheesy original (which I loved!), this time it's more of a guitar&piano affair, with the mandatory rap break in the middle. It sounds good, and it's for a good cause.. but it drags on a bit and it all goes horribly wrong at the end with a really bad guitar solo that's totally unnecessary.

New Job

I started my new job today, and they didn't have the PC set up in my office yet. So I passed the time reading and getting to know my new colleagues... It's amazing how much there is to do when you manage to tear yourself away from the darned PC!

Mad M2000

And speaking of maintaining anonymity... WHERE THE HELL IS MADM2000? I've been quiet on the subject for weeks, thinking he maybe traveling or مستعسر مع رمضان but now I am truly concerned. We usually chat on MSN Messenger but I haven't seen him since his last post on his blog. I even sent him an email and checked both his MSN and Yahoo Groups sites... Nothing.

However, at some point during Ramadan... he popped up on my MSN Messenger for a couple of minutes. I sent him a message asking him where the hell he had been, and he didn't reply. BUT... suddenly his online MSN ID changed to "From Prison". I told him that was not very funny, and a sick joke. No reply...

That was the last time I saw him, and his ID on my MSN list is still "From Prison"

What do y'all think?

I am really truly jealous and green with envy of all the Kuwaiti bloggers who have managed to keep their identities completely anonymous. I think my cover is blown.. not that I really care, but still...

There! I said it!

Honey Honey!

What the hell is going on with all these announcements from various local honey manufacturers claiming they have the endorsement and approval of the Ministry of Health? In today's Al-Watan on the front page, there's a news item about the ministry issuing a public warning to watch out for false claims by these honey manufacturers, and warns that their honey could even cause liver damage and kidney failure!!

But right under the article is a paid advertisment by the notorious عسل العويد who shot to fame during Ramadan with all kinds of bizarre and false health claims.

It's amazing what people can get away with here. Have we truly become such a law-less country?!

Meanwhile... Kuwait is considered an important honey producer. Who knew?!

اسقاط الفواتير

لا أدري، بل لا أفهم، لماذا يستمر موضوع اسقاط فواتير الكهرباء عن بعض المواطنين الخونة - نعم الخونة - عرضة للنقاش والجدل والمساومات. فإلى جانب كون هذا الموضوع خاضع لمزايدات نواب الفساد لكسب أصوات ناخبيهم الفاسدين مثلهم، لا أفهم لماذا لا تقطع وزارة الطاقة الخدمة عن المتخلفين عن السداد وتريحنا من حنّتهم وحنّة نوابهم؟

بما أني لم أتابع هذا الموضوع عن قرب منذ التحرير إلى الآن، ليس لدي أدنى فكرة عن المبالغ المنتظر تحصيلها، ولا أدري إن كانت هذه المبالغ مستحقة عن فترة محددة أم لا زالت تتراكم وتتزايد حتى اليوم.... وأتمنى أن تفيدوني هنا

على العموم، الحل واضح إلا إذا كانت لوزير الطاقة حساباته الخاصة.... إقطعوا الكهرباء والماء عنهم وعسى حياتهم خرمس وقحط إلى أبد الآبدين

21st Century Manners

I read this very entertaining article which takes a philosophical approach to modern manners, and I felt I have to share some of its advice regarding everything from mobile phone etiquette to travel rules to public displays of affection:

• Never text anybody while in the middle of a conversation.
• You should not accept or continue a phone call if a shop assistant is serving you.
• You should always monitor your volume when chatting on your mobile.
• Stop for pedestrians at pedestrian crossings.
• Do not smooch in the company of others.
• Always dump in person, not by text, fax or email.
• If you go through a door first you should always hold it open for those who follow.
• Offer your seat to the elderly, but don't assume they'll want it.
• If invited to someone's house for dinner, don't be one of the "ungrateful fed".
• Never tell somebody else's child off in front of them, or criticise adults for their poor parenting. Except when you should.
• Wipe down gym equipment after use.
• Remember that neither the cinema nor the theatre is your front room.
• Don't punctuate your sentences with profanities in public.

The Da Vinci Code

I know I'm waaaaay behind, embarrasingly so even... but I FINALLY got around to reading The Da Vinci Code while I was away, having seen every other person read it in various versions and languages on the beach on my last break... and the one before that, to the point where I felt a bit left out. What was this novel that had everyone so gripped? I had to get my hands on it ASAP. I finished it last week it and now I'm OBSESSED!!

I want to visit all the locations in the novel. Some I've seen before as a teenager, but I need to see again them with different eyes.. knowing what I know now.

Even though the allegations in the book have since been refuted as just fiction, I was still gripped by the alleged extreme measures taken by the Church to suppress the true of origins of Christianity, and how it allegedly conspired to increase its grip on power and keep Christians subjugated to its authority by keeping these secrets for centuries. It got me thinking about the possibility of parallels with today's version of Islam, which I always suspected has been distorted from its true origins beyond recognition even though I have no real knowledge about this. It's just a nagging feeling..

Another thing... how come the Vatican didn't issue a "fatwa" calling for Dan Brown's death?

ثم ما هي تكاليف مثل هذه القناة؟ وما الذي يضمن أن الشباب والناشئة سيقبلون على مشاهدتها دون غيرها من مئات المحطات الفضائية المتوفرة؟ وهل سيفضل شبابنا متابعة برامجها على الهياتة في الشوارع؟

لاداعي يا جماعة لهذه القناة الجديدة لأنكم اختطفتوا تلفزيون الكويت وطوعتوه لخدمة أهدافكم غير النبيلة منذ زمن طويل، فما عليكم سوى زيادة جرعة البرامج الدينية قليلاً وتتحقق أمنيتكم بقناة تربوية اسلامية على كيف كيفكم وبدون دوخة راس

عموماً كل تأخيرة وفيها خيرة، وقد وجدت هذا الموقع مثيراً للغاية وشيء جميل جداً وأتمنى أن يكون بداية نشاط منظم يسعى إلى التغيير الإيجابي والدفاع عن الدستور والمحافظة على ما تبقى من حريات هزيلة تتطاير مع رياح الإنفعالات والعواطف والتديّن الفالصو

It's about time someone said this, because it's getting ridiculous and way out of hand!

أميركان أكثر من الأميركان

لا أعرف سبباً مقنعاً لهذه الضجة التي تثار ضد إصدار بيان من القوى السياسية في داخل مجلس الأمة أو خارجها فيما يخص ما تتعرض له الفلوجة من قبل القوات الأميركية، وللأسف الشديد فان المعارضة من القوى الليبرالية التي تعتبر احدى أهم قواعدها السياسية تقبل الرأي الآخر وعدم الانفراد بالرأي الواحد! وكأنه كفر سياسي الا تنتقد الولايات المتحدة الاميركية تجاه أي عمل تقوم به، ومن المفارقات التي يتجاهلها أعداء الرأي الآخر، ان القوى السياسية الأميركية ذاتها تنتقد بشراسة ما يحصل حالياً في الفلوجة والطرق الوحشية التي تمارس هناك، بينما في الكويت محرم تماماً إبداء أدنى احتجاج على السياسة الأميركية

مشكلتنا في الكويت ان البعض أميركي أكثر من الأميركان أنفسهم! وهو أمر خطير للغاية سبق لي شرحه في مقالي السابق الفلوجة تحترق. الأمر الثاني ان طرح الرأي المخالف لا يعني بالضرورة ان الولايات المتحدة الاميركية ستتبناه في اليوم التالي، فأميركا باقية في العراق شئنا أم أبينا! وهي تنفذ بذلك سياسة مكتوبة يعمل على تنفيذها بغض النظر عن الرأي الآخر سواء الأميركي أو الكويتي! فعلى من ينادي دائماً بسماع أكثر من رأي ألا يتضايق من وجود أصوات كويتية أخرى لا تقبل بالسياسة الأميركية

إن مسألة عدم التعرض الى سياسة الولايات المتحدة الأميركية كون ان الأخيرة نرتبط معها بمصالح مشتركة إنما هو عذر غير مقبول إطلاقاً، فأميركا قبل غيرها تأسست على فكر الاختلاف، وأوضح دليل على ذلك ما جرى في الانتخابات الرئاسية قبل أسابيع قليلة، لكن في النهاية تبادل بوش وكيري الحديث والتهاني والتأكيد على مصلحة الولايات المتحدة الأميركية، بل وتأكيد بوش على ضرورة كسب الأصوات التي صوتت لكيري وإقناعها بسياسة حزبه

يبدو اننا في الكويت بحاجة الى كم ألف سنة كي نهضم الديموقراطية والتعددية السياسية، والى ذلك الحين فإن الوضع سيبقى على ما هو عليه من ضيق صدر للرأي الآخر والكفر بوجهات النظر، والولاء المطلق للتوجه السياسي والمكابرة الى أبعد الحدود

Couldn't have said it better myself! These fools don't realize that by worrying too much about what the US might think, they are actually insulting it by assuming it doesn't accept dissenting opinions and that it's this petty and small-minded.... And that it actually cares what we think!!

Kuwaiti Couture?

This one's for all you ladies, because "you gotta lotta 'splainin' to do!"

In our new blogger NYChick's rant on my post from before the Eid, she went off the rails on several issues that annoy her in Kuwait, most of which we've talked about before... But the one that caught my attention is this latest phenomenon/fad/هبّة of some delusional young Kuwaiti women who call themselves "fashion designers", but are really just some untrained girls with spare time, a sketch pad, a few Filipina seamstresses, and unlimited access to some of the "less than tasteful" fabrics from البلوكات. The majority - if not all - of these "designers" specialize in درّاعات (i.e. nothing any sane woman would wear in public) as evidenced by their ads in the papers before Ramadan to announce their new collections just in time for all the private social gatherings and غبقات to come. And of course, the ones that hit the jackpot are the designers who manage to dress Kuwait TV's various female personalities during Ramadan, thus inflicting their eye-sore designs on an unsuspecting audience beyond our borders.

From what I understand, a small number of these young ladies are actually pretty good but just need to refine their technique a bit; a few courses in a specialized fashion academy wouldn't hurt. But the overwhelming majority of them are just plain terrible and tasteless, and are only supported by their friends and family out of obligation, and of course by their colleagues at the ministries since that's apparently where they show their "creations".

Don't get me wrong.... a local fashion industry and young Kuwaiti talent are definitely things to be encouraged, but only if done right and with proper guidance and training.

And yet.... now that we're on this subject.... how come NONE of these so-called designers make day clothes that women can wear to work, for example?

While I was away having fun on my "in-between-jobs" break ... how did you fellow bloggers spend your عيد الفطر holidays? Were your plans screwed by the confusion over the correct Eid dates? Did you do anything fun or exciting?

Tell me everything!!

Visas

Two friends are getting married this weekend, and they have invited many of their friends from around the region to attend. Among the invited guests are 2 Jordanian ladies who live and work in Dubai.

They applied for their visitors visa through the hotel where they will be staying, and guess what? Their visa requests were denied, and now they will have to rely on local "wasta" and hopefully get their visas ready in time for the wedding.

Several questions arise...

1. Were they denied the visas because they are Jordanian?
2. Were they denied because they are single Jordanian females?
3. Are they are a threat to national security?
4. Why is it that we can travel anywhere we like but others have to BEG and GROVEL to get a visitor's visa to Kuwait, God's promised land?

Ramadan, Week by Week

I notice a lot of people complaining about how this year's Ramadan is "not as fun" as it used to be. While I don't really disagree, I think the secret to making the most of Ramadan lies in managing your expectations, so there aren't any nasty surprises or disappointments.

So my fellow bloggers, here's my handy Print+Save guide to making the most of every Ramadan, week by week.

Disclaimer: This is a strictly non-religious guide. If you're looking to me for spiritual guidance, then you're in deep shit!

Week 1

1. No matter how secular you think you are, you can't deny the lovely feeling of calm and spirituality that descends on the country as... hang on... &%$#@*!! [curses the fat woman in a jeep who just cut him off on the highway] .
2. If the spirituality thing doesn't rock your boat, rejoice in the delicious treats awaiting you at the table when you break your fast. And everywhere else you go for that matter. Calories be damned!
3. The buzz of Ramadan is just out of the starting gate, with all the social and family visits.
4. This is the week where your eyes glaze over, trying to decide which "musalsalat" you will follow for the rest of the month.

Week 2

1. With social obligations out of the way, now's the time for assorted "gabgas" at friends' homes, or you might consider hosting one yourself.
2. You've sorted the "wheat from the chaff" in TV series and you've settled into a comfortable pattern. I bet Tivo could make a killing here!
3. Buy candy for قرقيعان and enjoy the last remaining shreds of Kuwaiti tradition as they become history. Start bitching about how when you were a kid... blah, blah, blah.
4. Ladies, this is the week to compare notes on whose قرقيعان was the tackiest.

Week 3

1. Guilt sets in and you hit the gym in a vain attempt to burn the calories you piled on in weeks 1 and 2.
2. Social activities start to slow down. You find time to check out the public areas like Marina Mall, maybe even go shopping.
3. Get tired of hearing yourself telling people your plans for the Eid.

Week 4

1. The clocks and calendars mysteriously seem to be going backwards, as no matter how fast you think Ramadan went by... the last week ALWAYS crawls at a snail's pace.
2. You can't bear the sight of the daily "Iftar" food anymore. In fact your food intake is greatly reduced in comparison to the first week.
3. You look forward to resuming normal sleep patterns, which you know you won't do during the Eid.
4. Everyone else is tired of Ramadan, since the novelty has worn off. فرقاه عيد indeed!

كويتي في الفلوجة

لست معنياً هنا بما يجري بين وزارة الإعلام ومنتجي مسرحية "كويتي في الفلوجة"، لأنني غسلت يدي من الحركة المسرحية الكويتية - إن صح تسميتها بذلك - منذ زمن طويل وخاصة بعد مأساة "قناص خيطان" التي تغنّت بها الصحف والجماهير وكأنها عودة لأمجاد مسرح السبعينات أيام المرحوم الشيخ جابر العلي، لم أرى فيها سوى نجمين كبيرين يهبطان إلى مستوى لم أتوقعه وسببت لي صدمة واحباط فوق الوصف

لكن سؤالي للمخرج محمد الرشود -اللي أخوه صقر يتقلب بقبره! - ألم تجد إسماً لمسرحيتك أفضل من هذا؟ الفلوجة تشهد حرباً دامية منذ شهور وتشتد أكثر هذه الأيام، وحتى لو كانت الحرب مع فلول صدام وبقية الارهابيين الزرقاويين، الكثير من الأطفال والنساء الأبرياء وقعوا وسيقعون ضحايا هذا القتال... مو وقته الله يهداك، ليش ما سميتها "كويتي في البصرة" مثلاً؟ الغريب أن وزارة الإعلام اعترضت على استخدام كلمة "كويتي" وليس "الفلوجة" واقترحت تغييرها إلى "حب في الفلوجة".......يعني يكون أفضل، مالت عليهم

وطبعاً ما صدّق على الله الأخ فؤاد الهاشم وطب بالملعب ليهاجم الوزير أبوالحسن بخصوص هذه المسرحية وغيرها، واقترح جنابه على الوزير "أن يجمع كل ما كتب عنه في الصحافة ويجلس في خلوة مع نفسه ليسألها.. هل نجحت كوزير لوزارة حساسة مثل الإعلام؟ وهل أضفت شيئا لاعمال من سبقني إلى هذا الكرسي؟.. بمعنى آخر ليسأل السيد أبوالحسن نفسه.. هل أتيت بما لم يأت به.. الأوائل؟؟

أي أوائل واللي يرحم والديك؟؟ وهل الذين سبقوه إلى الكرسي تركوه له كاملاً أم لازالوا جالسين على طريف الكرسي يطلون فوق كتفه ويدودهونه ويشاغبونه في شغله؟ ثم ما هي الإضافات "المسكتة" التي تتكلم عنها؟ مسلسلات فجر السعيد مثلاً؟ إن من حقك يا أستاذ فؤاد أن تنتقد وزير الإعلام كما ترى وتشرشحه بعد لأنه خيب آمالنا، لكن رجاءً بدون الضحك على الذقون ومقارنته بمن سبقوه.... من حلاتهم

بس تصدقون؟ أخوكم زيدون إنسان منصف ويعطي كل ذي حق حقه.... فبقدر ما استشطت غضباً على الكاتب في بداية مقاله إلا أنني غشيت من الضحك وصفقت له عندما قرأت نهاية عمود اليوم... مبروك لرئيس مجلس ادارة شركة السينما الكويتية على التهاني التي وصلت اليه من أكثر من مائة سيدة حول قراره إغلاق دور العرض خلال العشر الأواخر، ونذكره ـ فقط ـ بحديث الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم بأنهن.. ناقصات عقل ودين

Beware the Flu

It's gonna get you if you're not careful. There's a virus going around town and yours truly has been sick at home since Saturday.

I went to my favorite doctor Saturday evening for her magic injection, and I noticed something strange. There were many male patients with beards and short dishdashas (i.e. religious) and they had no problem at all getting an injection on their butts by a female nurse.

Weird, huh?

Playlist November 6-12

A very mixed bag this week. In fact, if you've been following my playlists over the past few months (and I suspect most of you haven't), I dare any of you to define my musical tastes.

1. مروان خوري - كل القصايد: If you are not moved by this beautiful song, then you are an evil heartless robot and must be destroyed!
2. Alphabetical - Phoenix: A rarity in music; a very cool French band from the land where tacky Vegas-style singers pass for serious musicians (see Johnny Halliday, Dalida et al.)
3. Hush - LL Cool J: All hip-hop should be this sunny, bouncy and fun. Great for playing in the car too.
4. محمد عبدو: A selection of his classics that I copied onto the old iPod. The man is a living legend. It's amazing how the planet's most repressed nation can produce such artistry.
5. Little Girl Blue - Janis Joplin: The rock legend cut down in her prime by a heroin overdose in 1970. This is her beautiful rendition of an old Nina Simone song.

And of course, the week wouldn't be complete without a celebration of last week's US election victory for George W. Bush, Green Day's American Idiot is the song I've chosen. Again!

صاحبة العصمة شركة السينما ركبت الموجة الدينية وأعلنت اغلاق السينمات في العشر الأواخر.. علما بأن لدينا في الكويت جاليات غير مسلمة (مسيحيين.. وبوذيين.. وهندوس.. وسيخ) فما ذنب هؤلاء، ثم ما ذنب المساهمين أصحاب الأسهم نتيجة ابعاد هذا القرار على سعر السهم في البورصة؟.. ولماذا لم تفكر شركة السينما في تسلية صيام الصائم ام ان افلامها بايخة لا يدخلها عدد كبير؟

وفي المقابل، ها قد انبرى نائب كيفان ليشيد بهذه البادرة
القرار الذي أصدرته شركة الكويت للسينما بتوقيف عروض السينما خلال العشر الأواخر من شهر رمضان المعظم قرار جيد ويحسب لصالح هذه الشركة وللأخوة رئيس وأعضاء مجلس إدارة الشركة، وأدعوهم إلى عدم الالتفاف إلى الأصوات النشاز التي تصدرها هناك وتنتقد هذا القرار الحكيم لأن شهر رمضان شهر العبادة والقيام، ويتأكد القيام في العشر الأواخر، وكان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا دخلت العشر الأواخر، أيقظ أهله وأحيا ليله وشدّ المئزر واعتكف في المسجد ملتمسا أجر عبادة ليلة القدر التي هي في العشر الأواخر من رمضان، هذه الليلة العظيمة التي من حرم أجرها فقد حرم الخير كله، والعبادة فيها خير من ألف شهر أي من نحو 83 سنة وأربعة أشهر حيث تتنزل الملائكة إلى الأرض فتضيق بهم الأرض فسميت ليلة القدر أي الضيق، فلهذا ماذا يضرنا لو أننا أجلنا اللهو واللعب إلى ما بعد العشر الأواخر من رمضان

ما يضرنا يا شيخ وليد هو أنه اليوم ستغلق دور السينما في العشرة الأواخر، وغداً ستغلق طوال شهر رمضان وهلم جرا....إلى أن تستولي انت وربعك والمنافقين الذين يجاملونكم على ما تبقى من وسائل الترفيه المحدودة في بلدنا حتى تتحول إلى كويتستان الطالبانية

Kanafani

Oh Kanafani... How do I love thee? Let me count the ways

1. Eating Kunafa is now made easier and more convenient by producing them in 3 different sizes, rather than a huge tray the size of a tennis court.
2. I love the pizza-style boxes they come in, with the little syrup containers. Much better than those individually wrapped cardboard trays that leaked syrup all over the place.
3. Different varieties to suit every taste.
4. They deliver!

The next logical step is for Kanafani to set up a website, where hungry customers can place their order (type, size, quantity), enter their address and select what time they want them delivered, or alternatively what time they want to pick them up and from which branch, enter personal information (or even set up an account!) and.... voila! KUNAFA-ON-DEMAND!!

Yesterday I had the foresight to call an hour ahead and place my order to be ready at 4.30 pm. I arrived at the "Janoob Al-Surra" branch to find a madhouse of people screaming for their orders. Fortunately, mine was ready in time for me to be in and out of there in 2 minutes. I felt so sorry for the staff, they were overwhelmed.

One other thing I noticed outside, was the line of cars waiting since 4.30 pm for the McDonalds' drive-thru to open. I don't know about you, but the thought of breaking the fast with a Big Mac makes me ill. I wonder if Supersize Me will ever play here soon...

Radio Sawa

I've never been a huge fan of Radio Sawa. It's good for when you have people over and you have no music to play - no worries for me there! - but otherwise their English/Western playlist is too damn awful; way too many boy bands and teen pop and not enough rock. So I find myself humming along to the latest Arabic hit and then when the English song comes on, 9 times out 10 I have to change the channel or switch to a CD.

However, for the past couple of days since Sheikh Zayed (RIP) passed away, they have been playing the most beautiful selection of عود and تقاسيم. It's really something!

Go figure..

دروشة المجتمع الكويتي

في الوقت الذي تتسابق فيه دول المنطقة والعالم نحو النمو الاقتصادي والتنمية في عصر العولمة الاقتصادية نجد بعض مؤسسات المجتمع المدني في الكويت وفي القطاع الخاص بالتحديد تتسابق مع الحكومة ومؤسساتها في جر المجتمع نحو الانغلاق والدروشة.. فهم يسعون تدريجياً الى القضاء على المجتمع الانفتاحي في الكويت وابعاد أهالي الكويت المعتدلين في دياناتهم وعلاقتهم مع الآخرين الى تبني مفاهيم متخلفة تدعو الى عدم احترام الآخر والغاء روح التسامح والاعتدال والوسطية

في الأمس أعلنت شركة السينما الوطنية الكويتية إغلاق دور العرض السينمائية في العشر الأواخر.. الشركة ليست شركة خاصة أو ان ملاكها من المساهمين ينتمون للاخوان المسلمين أو الحركة السلفية.. الشركة حسب علمي هي شركة مساهمة كويتية عامة.. ويعني ذلك ان أسهمها مدرجة في البورصة وربما يكون مالكو الأسهم من مشايخ الدين أو غيرهم لكن لا يجوز ان تقدم ادارة الشركة على اغلاقها لفترة عشرة أيام مما قد يكبد الشركة خسائر مادية

السؤال هنا: ما الغرض أو الهدف الرئيسي من إغلاق دور السينما من قبل مجلس الإدارة؟ هل يحاول أعضاء مجلس الادارة إخبار الناس بالكويت بأنهم ملتزمون دينياً.. إذا كان هذا هو السبب اللهم زد وبارك ديانتهم الجديدة, ولكن ما علاقة ذلك بالشركة التي يديرونها.. وكيف يتم زج القضايا الدينية في مصالح المساهمين بالشركة؟.. التساؤل الثاني الذي نود طرحه هل الذهاب للسينما أو المسرح يمنع من يريد الصلاة والتعبد من صلاته؟ وإذا تم إغلاق السينما.. هل يعني ان رواد السينما من المواطنين والمقيمين سيذهبون للمساجد للصلاة بدلاً من السينما؟

لو ان هناك منافسة حقيقية في بلد مفتوح اقتصادياً بين شركات السينما فيحق للشركة ان تغلق أبوابها لأن البدائل موجودة ومفتوحة.. لكن سياسة الاحتكار التي تمارسها شركة السينما جعلتها تتخذ سياسات تعسفية غير منطقية بإغلاق السينما في وجه روادها من الأجانب والمواطنينمرة أخرى نتساءل ما الهدف الحقيقي من هذه السياسة؟ ما دام فتح السينما لا يؤثر على رواد المساجد ودور العبادة أتصور بأن هناك توجهاً من بعض الأفراد والشركات التي يملكها الاسلام السياسي الى زيادة الجرعة الدينية ودروشة المجتمع.. لمحاربة الفن والفنانين والأدباء والشعراء وكل من لديه تفكير مستنير في المجتمع الكويتي, ما نتخوف منه هو ان تكون هذه الخطوة بداية لخطوات اخرى مثل إغلاق المحال والمطاعم أوقات الصلاة وقد بدأت الجمعيات التعاونية ومحطات الوقود بالإغلاق يوم الجمعة وربما تمتد لأيام الأسبوع في أوقات الصلاة.. هل التدين وزيادة أعداد المساجد ودروشة المجتمع الكويتي أخرجت لنا مجتمعاً تقياً ومتعبداً.. أبداً العكس صحيح والدليل على ذلك ارتفاع معدلات الجريمة وتعاطي المخدرات والخمور والبغاء والفساد والمحسوبية وكل السلبيات التي يرفضها الدين الإسلامي الحنيف

ماذا يعني ذلك؟ يعني ببساطة ان زيادة التدين ليست ظاهرة دينية حقيقية.. بل هي سياسية وشكليات مزيفة وليست حقيقية وإلا كيف نفسر ازدياد الغش في الشركات التي تدعي التدين والعلاج الاسلامي.. كان آخرها العسل المغشوش الذي يصلح لكل الأمراض.. الذي اكتشفت مختبرات الدولة بأنه مغشوش وأخيراً نسأل الدراويش الجدد في القطاع الحكومي أو الخاص ماذا تريدون من الكويت ان تكون بإغلاقكم كل مظاهر البهجة في المجتمع.. ما الغرض من إغلاق البلد ودروشة المجتمع؟.. يعني تماماً ان هدفكم المعلن هو أسلمة القوانين والمجتمع تمهيداً للوصول للسلطة لكن لماذا تحاولون تحويل الكويت الى دولة طالبان جديدة هل تريدونها ان تكون مكاناً لتفريخ الارهابيين الجدد للجهاد في الفلوجة من الشباب الكويتي الذين تحاولون منعهم من دخول دور السينما!؟

إذا كان من فارق يرجح أحدهما على الآخر فهو ان جون كيري يعرف أكثر من جورج بوش عن الشرق الأوسط, وكل قضية أخرى. وليس هذا صعباً, فجورج بوش الذي تخرج من كلية التجارة في جامعة هارفارد, وجلس في مجالس ادارة شركات كيري, لم يستفد من الدراسة أو "البزنس" ولم يفد أحداً, فهو بقي في شبه غيبوبة, بين خمر وغيره, حتى سنة 1985 عندما كان عمره 39 عاماً, وأحرج والديه في حفلة عامة واستعان الأب, وكان نائباً للرئيس ريغان, بالمبشر بيلي غراهام, فأخذ هذا الابن الى دروس دين, ووجد الابن ما يريد فأصبح مسيحياً متجدداً, وانتقل من العبث الى التطرف الديني

وهل هذا قدرنا نحن الكويتيين أيضاُ؟ ما أكثر السرسرية والشباب الصايعين الذين اكتشفوا دينهم وربهم بعد ما تشبعوا من حياة الوناسة، وانتقلوا أيضاً من العبث الى التطرف الديني وغدوا أكثر غلواً وتطرفاً في تديّنهم من شعب الكويت المحافظ بالفطرة، حتى أصبحوا نواب في مجلس الأمة يفتون وينهرون ويزجرون بخلق الله يومياً، يحرّمون لغيرهم ما أحلّوه لأنفسهم أيام الصبا

Absentee Voting

A newsflash across the TV screens last night said that NASA astronauts voted for their choice of president from outer space! I couldn't get that image out of my mind, and whether Bush or Kerry wins (and sadly, it's looking like Bush) you can't help but admire democracy at its greatest.

I've always wondered how come Kuwaiti citizens who live or work abroad are not allowed to vote at our embassies around the world using an absentee ballot, and what's the logic behind denying our armed forces the right to vote as well?

Today's The Day

America will choose its next president today. Some claim that for us Arabs, it doesn't really matter who wins. Some - especially in Kuwait - want Bush to win because he's الغالي ولد الغالي, applying our backward tribal mentality to American elections. Oh wait, I forgot that's how we vote here...

Many Arabs also want Kerry to win, especially after Bush's monumental disaster in Iraq. Getting rid of Saddam Hussein was a great achievement, but the daily bloodbath in Iraq is anything but. 100,000 Iraqi civilians have died since the war. That is much too high a price and if Kerry wins, he will have the unenviable task of cleaning up that mess.

A lot of Kuwaitis object to Kerry because he voted against sending troops to kick Saddam Hussein out of Kuwati in 1990. I personally don't care about that at all, because when he voted that way it was not out of direct malice or hatred towards Kuwait but out of concern for the US troops and the cost of war etc., all legitimate concerns... The sooner we realize that the world does not revolve around us, the easier it will be for us to understand how the world works.

I prepped myself for the election by watching Fahrenheit 9/11 yesterday afternoon (finally!). How anyone can vote for Bush after seeing that movie is beyond comprehension. I personally found it a little over the top, and uncomfortable in some parts. But what really made my blood boil is how the 2000 elections were literally stolen. I'm no fan of Al Gore, but if this is how the USA conducts its elections, then what hope do we have? More nightmare stories are emerging daily and many predict another extended showdown in Florida, or possibly Ohio, just like last time. At the rate they're going, by 2008 they will need UN election monitors at every polling station!

Many informed Americans feel that history will remember Bush as the worst president they've ever had. Certainly, he's the most polarizing president ever. Whereas, in the past, most Americans couldn't really get that worked up for or against any president, Bush has created an atmosphere of rabid hatred from his opponents and over-zealous adoration from his fans. That can't be healthy in any democracy, least of all in the country that holds itself as a shining example.

So, not that anyone really cares what I think, Kuwait Unplugged officially endorses John Kerry for President because there's no way he will be worse than Bush, and because I need a break from seeing and hearing Bush on TV!!

And just like Oscar night, we won't know the results till tomorrow morning!

Et Tu KNCC?

قرار شركة السينما الكويتية بإغلاق جميع دور العرض لمدة 10 أيام حتى عيد الفطر بمناسبة "العشر الأواخر" لا يمكن وصفه إلا بالسخافة والجبن وانعدام المنطق. تفاءلنا خيراً بإدارة الشركة الجديدة الشابة والتي وضعت لمسات إيجابية كثيرة على مفهوم الذهاب إلى السينما في الكويت، فأين دور السينما الحديثة من دور سينما الأمس مثل الأندلس والحمراء وغرناطة "مالوت أول"؟ نعلم أن لا حول ولا قوة لها ازاء مقص الرقابة الحكومي الطالباني الذي يبتر الأفلام ويفرغها من مضمونها، لكن الحلو ما بيكملش

السؤال للإدارة الجديدة أو لمن "خرّعها" ونصحها... ما الذي يحرم مشاهدة الأفلام في العشر الأواخر بالذات؟ وإذا كانت السينما حرام في العشر الأواخر أليس من المنطق أن تكون حرام طوال الشهر الفضيل؟ وإذا كانت حرام في رمضان، بعد كملوا جميلكم وحرموا السينما طول السنة علشان تكمل ديرة الحلال والحرام!؟

الله يسامحكم يا شركة السينما، وانشاءالله سهمكم يخفس أول ما يفتح السوق

I will not even attempt to find any logic or reason behind the latest government stunt, simply because there ain't none!

That said, how will you spend your KD 200 when you get your grubby hands on it? Most creative answer gets a prize to be determined later, after the shock has worn off.

إعلان كبير في صحف اليوم لحكومة دبي تهنيء به نفسها لحيازتها المركز الأول بين الدول العربية في الشفافية ومحاربة الفساد، وبيئة الاقتصاد الكلي، وإدارة المؤسسات العامة، والتقدم التكنولوجي، وتنافسية قطاع الأعمال، ومناخ العمل المحلي، واستراتيجيات وإدارة قطاع الأعمال، ومستوى التنافسية في الأسواق العالمية

نحن بدورنا لا يسعنا إلا أن نهنيء حكومة دبي على تحقيق هذه الإنجازات مع تذكيرها أن مجال المنافسة بينها وبين الدول العربية الشقيقة شبه معدوم أي بالكويتي الفصيح "أحسن من اللي أردى منهم"، لكن مع ذلك ندعو الله أن يوفقنا لنوصل مواصيلهم

كلما ذكر احد دبي وتحسّر على أحوالنا، غالباً ما يكون الكلام سطحي جداً حيث لا هم للغالبية سوى المنتجعات والبارات. أنا شخصياً لا أحسد دبي على هذه الأشياء لأنها متوفرة في كل مكان (وغالباً بذوق أفضل)، لكن لا بد من الإعجاب بإنجازات دبي التحارية والإقتصادية التي أصبحت حديث العالم، ولا يمكن لأي عاقل أن يتجاهلها

ولابد أيضاً أن نتساءل: شفينا إحنا؟؟ أعلم تماماً أنه لايوجد في دبي نظام سياسي ولا دستور ولا مجلس أمة أعوج يقف نوابه حجر عثرة في وجه التقدم والتطور بدل من المطالبة بهما، ويرى الأمور من منظور الحلال والحرام.... لكن يبقى بالنهاية أن السلطة في دبي وضعت لنفسها خطة والتزمت بتنفيذها، وهذا هو كل ما في الأمر

السلطة هنا بيدها أن تغير الكثير وتنجز المستحيل لكن يبدو أن الأمور عاجبتها كما هي. والا أنا غلطان؟

Playlist October 30 - November 5

My God, it's already November? كله من أعمارنا !!

Anyway, sorry for the delay but I've been hooked watching "24" Season 3 on DVD.. This week's playlist, in keeping with the constant hunger of Ramadan, has a food theme:

1. Ice Cream - Sarah McLachlan: "Your love is better than ice cream.." Uh, sorry Sarah babe... Once I get my hands on a tub of Baskin-Robbins Strawberry Cheesecake, ain't nothing gonna top it!
2. Chocolate - Snow Patrol: If it wasn't for the damn traffic, I'd be at Chocolate Bar every night!
3. Juicy Fruit - Mtume: One of the sexiest, slinkiest, funkiest R&B songs ever recorded. An old school masterpiece. Yummy in every way, even with ridiculous lyrics.
4. Die Young, Stay Pretty - Blondie: OK, no food here but wiser words were never commited to song. "Live fast, 'cause it won't last!" Amen to that!
5. Pursuit of Happiness - Weekend Players: This is one of those calming yet upbeat albums that I fish out every now and then.

Faith Through Fright

Look everbody! It's not just us!!

Just in time for Halloween tomorrow, it seems Christian Fundamentalists have also been using fear and loathing to get wayward lapsed Christians back onto the path of salvation, by scaring the "bejeezus" out of them!

Check out their Haunted Mansion, where "pilgrims" go to have their wits scared out of them and learn what happens to them after they die, just like the عذاب القبر lectures we have here, only they don't teach this stuff to kids in school and they actually charge admission to get in.

People actually pay for this stuff!

القرقيعان بين الحلال والحرام

ولما لا؟ فقد أصبح كل شيء في حياتنا معرض للشك والتساؤل حول شرعيته أو عدمها

حتى القرقيعان لم يسلم من فتاوي شيوخ الجهل والظلام وها هو الشيخ محمد الطبطبائي (طبطبائي 2) يجيز القرقيعان لعباد الله المسلمين مع التذكير بأن القرقيعان لم "يكن موجوداً في زمن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ولا اعلم له اصلاً في التاريخ الاسلامي" كما يذكرنا فضيلة الشيخ بعدم الاسراف والتبذير في توزيع القرقيعان، كما أشرنا سابقاً

أشوه يا ناس! والله يا جماعة صار لي 3 ليالي طول فترة القرقيعان ما نمت من الوسواس! مادري القرقيعان حلال ولا حرام، وهل ساهمت بارتكاب معصية ودفع الأطفال الأبرياء إلى طريق السوء والعياذ بالله، أم لا؟

السؤال هنا لفضيلة الشيخ: ما الذي فتح هذا الموضوع؟ هل اتصل بك أحد الجهلة، وما أكثرهم، أقلقت منامه هذه العادة الكويتية القديمة ليطلب منك أن تفتي له حول شرعيتها؟ للأسف الشديد لم يعد هذا الأمر مستغرباً في عصر الظلمات وتغييب العقل الذي نعيشه

قرقيعان آخر موديل

مع أن الظاهرة لم تعد جديدة في أيامنا الغريبة هذه، أتمنى منكم أن تشرحوا لي كيف ومتى أصبح القرقيعان مناسبة للشحاطة والتباهي بإرسال هدايا القرقيعان للكبار بإسم الأطفال الصغار اللي ما يدرون عن الدنيا. الموضوع يثير استغرابي كل سنة ودائماً أتمنى أن تكون هذه العادة الدخيلة هبّة من هبّات المجتمع الكويتي المعهودة، لكن السالفة شكلها مطولة

عندما كان محسوبكم طفلاً صغيراً، كان القرقيعان مناسبة بسيطة وبريئة نخرج فيها بدون لا سائق ولا مربّية ونتجول خلالها في الفريج (منطقتنا وليس منطقة أخرى لأنها أكشخ) وندق الجرس على البيوت ونغني لعيالهم ويعطونا ما لديهم من حلويات ومكسرات حزرة وشوية خردة ثم نرجع إلى أهالينا لكي نعطيهم تقرير الجولة: منو عندهم قرقيعان زين، منو ما عندهم شي، منو استقبلنا بنفس خايسة....الخ. ولا أذكر بتاتاً أن أحداً أرسل هدايا قرقيعانية إلى والدي أو والدتي بإسم أطفال صغار لم يروهم من قبل

من ابتدع هذه العادة الدخيلة السخيفة؟ ألا تعلم سيدات مجتمع المظاهر أن هذه العادة تشكل مادة إضافية للسخرية والطنازة والانتقاد من قبل قريناتهن المرسل إليهن هذه الهدايا؟ ناقصين باب جديد ينفتح عليكم؟ بروح اللي فيكم كافيكم، بعد تجيبون حق نفسكم كلام زايد ما له داعي ليش؟

وفروا جهودكم وفلوسكم أو تصدقوا فيها بإسم عيالكم وايد أبرك

ملاحظة: الموضوع "يقرقع" في قلبي من أول رمضان، والمعذرة لمن أرسل لي قرقيعان صباح اليوم، فليس هم من أعطاني فكرة موضوع اليوم

Carried Away?

OK folks, I think we got carried away with the last discussion to the point where we imagined goon squads showing up at Bloggers' doors and dragging them away in the middle of the night!

People, this is Kuwait.. not Iraq or Saudi Arabia, or even Syria or Egypt! Our constitution guarantees freedom of expression so long as we don't go near الذات الأميرية . If someone doesn't like what they read on the blogs - most of which is taken from the papers anyway - they can take us to court and will have to prove that what we say is not true. Alternatively, they can go elsewhere to less "offensive" sites.

And if it's the Islamists you're worried about, they can go to جهنم وبئس المصير!!

Are Bloggers' Days Numbered?

Yesterday a friend expressed her concern that sooner or later, someone higher up would eventually get impatient with all the freewheeling uncensored "trash talk" on this blog and others, and put an end to our blogging by blocking access to the Blogger domain, applying the usual principle of الخير يخص والشر يعم . We could all move to other blogging services, but I guess they could catch up there too.

The conversation got me thinking... certainly that poorly written Kuwait Times article (which has since disappeared) didn't help much. But what do you all think?

1. Are the "powers that be" reckless enough to ban blogging, and risk negative publicity?
2. If - God forbid - it does happen, what alternatives are available?
3. Am I making a big deal out of nothing?

تلفزيونيات

الكاتبة المرموقة اقبال الأحمد عتبت على الصحفي الكبير محمد عبدالقادر الجاسم لاستضافته وزير الطاقة الشيخ أحمد الفهد في برنامجه على قناة الحرة ومحاورته عن شؤون الحكم ومستقبل آل الصباح، حيث تساءلت الكاتبة عن جدوى طرح هذا النقاش على محطة عربية وهو موضوع كويتي بحت لا يهم المشاهدين عبر الوطن العربي

برأيي المتواضع لا أعتقد أن أحداً في وزارة الاعلام (أو التضليل) لديه الجرأة لعرض مثل هذا الموضوع على قنوات الكويت التلفزيونية، ثم لاحظوا توقيت المقابلة في فترة اما الناس يتابعون فيها المسلسلات أو يخرجون للزيارات والدواوين.........و قد يكون سبباً أبسط هو أن الظهور على شاشات القنوات ذات الميزانيات السخية يظهر الإنسان على أفضل صورة نظراً لما تتمتع به من خبرات في الإضاءة الملائمة وحتى الماكياج الذي يضعه الضيوف، على عكس محطاتنا اللي تطلع الربع كأنهم حايشهم بصفار

وفي موضوع تلفزيوني آخر، طالعتنا الصحف بخبر وقف عرض مسلسل "الطريق إلى كابول" لأسباب غامضة وغير منطقية. فهل رضخت المحطات لقوى الإرهاب والظلام الطالبانية؟ الأيام ستكشف لنا الجواب. أنا شخصياً لم أتابعه لأنه يعرض في فترة لا تناسبني وأيضاً لأنني أفضل مشاهدة المسلسلات الخفيفة أثناء الصيام حيث لا تحتاج إلى تركيز وتفكير. ولكن بما أنه تعرض إلى المنع فقد أثار فضولي وأرجو من المنتجين أن يصدروه للبيع فقد يعود عليهم بمدخول أفضل من التلفزيونات الجبانة، لا بارك الله فيها

Negative? Moi?!

At last, somebody at Kuwait Times takes the time to "discover" the phenomenon of Blogging in Kuwait. And as Purgatory72 pointed out in the previous post's comments, the article calls this blog NEGATIVE!

Actually that description comes from a quote in the article by fellow blogger Rampurple:

"For example, some of us simply don't get along with Zaydoun (Kuwait Unplugged) and Mad M... they're just too negative. They keep criticising Kuwait and the people in it and so forth. If a non-Kuwait resident was reading their blogs they would think Kuwait is some hellhole"

I will give Rampurple the benefit of the doubt, and just assume that she was interviewed for this article when we all lost our tempers over my post about Lebanon last month. As far as I'm concerned, that's water under the bridge.

Besides, I don't think I should have to defend myself. But let me say this..... I don't make this stuff up. It's in the papers and all around us. Kuwait can be a very pleasant country if one makes the effort and turns a blind eye to some of its absurdities. If I thought Kuwait was a hell-hole I would've left years ago. Sure it has its ups and downs, just like any country, but I live a decent happy life here. The things both Mad M2000 and I talk about are very real. They are not cranky complaints just for the sake of complaining, they are real threats to the comfortable lives we all wish to lead. As I've said before on countless occasions, we talk about the bad things BECAUSE THEY NEED FIXING!

BLEEP! The closing paragraph that used to be part of this story has been delted due to some factual errors that apparently gave someone lots of ammunition to use unfairly against the person in question 1.5 years after original posting. Go figure!

Playlist October 23-29

Being in a Ramadan state of mind - or as close as I can get, I found myself listening to some old Arabic classics (that have nothing to do with Ramadan, but you get the idea) like Oum Kolthoum and some really old قصائد by Fairuz. I found it incredible that Fairuz - who is Christian - sang an entire song dedicated to Mecca غنّيت مكة composed by the Rahbani Brothers, also Christians. I guess those were more enlightened times back when this beautiful song was recorded. My mother tells me Fairuz performed it live on her first ever concert in Kuwait in 1964, and that KTV has a live recording in its archives. Can you honestly see Christians performing a similar song today without some Islamist fundamentalist asshole calling for their death? Is that why KTV doesn't play it at all?

Back to more "secular" music, I really like this cocky new band, Kasabian, from England. They're great fun and when I saw them interviewed on TV, their attitude reminded me of Oasis. So hurry and get them before they self-destruct as well!

Also great fun is Razorlight; a less arty version of Franz Ferdinand (who I'm slowly starting to like too)

نشرت جريدة ?السياسة? يوم الأربعاء 13 أكتوبر تقريراً طريفاً من تايوان عن ممارسات الجنس في العالم حيث أجرت الدراسة شركة ?ديوركس? لصناعة الواقي الذكري البريطانية - شارك فيها اكثر من 350 الف شخص من 41 دولة في العالم

بينت الدراسة ان الفرنسيين هم حالياً أكثر شعوب العالم ممارسة للجنس حيث يمارس الفرنسي الجنس 137 مرة في العام وهو ما يزيد بكثير عن المتوسط العالمي البالغ 103 مرات فيما احتل المجريون المرتبة الثانية واليونانيون الثالثة

وبينت الدراسة ان الآسيويين في مؤخرة القائمة حيث يمارس الصيني الجنس 90 مرة في العام والفيتنامي 87 والهندي 82 مرة أما الياباني فلا تزيد عدد مرات ممارسته عن 46 مرة في العام. وكشفت الدراسة ان الناس في انحاء العالم عادة لا يقتصرون على شخص واحد في ممارسة الجنس حيث يمارسونه مع أشخاص عدة يصل عددهم في المتوسط الى 10.5 شخص وسجل الصينيون النسبة الأعلى في ممارسة الجنس مع أشخاص مختلفين يصل عددهم الى 19.3 شخص في المتوسط في حين كان الفيتناميون الاكثر اخلاصا حيث لا يزيدعدد من يمارسون معهم الجنس عن 2.5 شريك.

ما يهمنا من هذه الدراسة هو انها لم تذكر أي شيء عن العرب مع ان العرب يقدر عددهم 280 مليونا ويعيش معظمهم في قارة آسيا.. ومعنى ذلك من المفترض ان تشملهم الدراسة الميدانية.. هل هناك مؤامرة امبريالية أميركية - صهيونية تحاول تجاهل الطاقة الجنسية عند العرب بإبرازهم بأنهم فاشلون ومتخلفون حتى في ممارسة الجنس؟ أم ان السبب يعود لتردي أحوالنا في كل الأمور الاقتصادية والسياسية والاجتماعية ويشمل ذلك الجنس طبعا.. قد يعود سبب اهمال العرب الى حقيقة ان العرب لا يستعملون الواقي (المانع) الجنسي إما لسبب ديني وهو ان العربي المسلم يبارك زيادة النسل ولا يمانع كثرة الأولاد لذلك لا غرابة من ان يكون معدل الولادة في الخليج مثلا 3.5 في المئة وفي مصر 2.5 في المئة وهي معدلات مرتفعة مقارنة بدول العالم الثالث والأول

ربما يعود سبب عدم ظهور العرب في الاحصاءات الجنسية الى حقيقة ان العرب ليس فقط لا يحبون استعمال الواقي بل انهم يمارسون الجنس بشكل خفي ولا يودون الحديث عنه.. فهناك ثلاثة محرمات في الوطن العربي لا يجوز الحديث عنها بحرية وهي الجنس والدين والسياسة

العرب عموما لا يؤمنون بالدراسات الميدانية بشكل عام فما بالك في القضايا الجنسية.. العرب لم يتعودوا على ابراز وجهة نظرهم بحرية مطلقة بعيدا عن الضغوط السياسية.. لذلك تأتي الاستفتاءات التي تجريها الحكومات على انتخاب الرئيس أو اختياره مرتفعة جدا تصل احيانا الى نسبة 99.9 في المئة المعروفة.. ليس هناك طريقة علمية تدلنا على ممارسة الجنس في الوطن العربي وهل اننا افضل اداء من الفرنسيين في ممارسة الجنس أو أقل.. الله أعلم, لكن الشيء المؤكد بأن ولع العرب بالجنس في السنوات الأخيرة يفوق كل التصورات والدلائل على ذلك كثيرة ومتعددة.. منها ارتفاع معدلات الزواج في الوطن العربي وكذلك معدلات الطلاق.. الشعبية الكبيرة المتزايدة للفيديو كليب لدى الشباب التي تحض على متابعة ومشاهدة الأغاني التي تبرز مفاتن المرأة وادائها في الرقص والغنج والدليل على ذلك بروز المغنية اللبنانية المشهورة ?نانسي عجرم? مما اثار حفيظة المحافظين في مصر وطالبوا بمنع أغانيها.. انتشار السحر والشعوذة وكتب الجنس التي تعد الرجال بزيادة طاقاتهم الجنسية حتى أصبح الإقبال على الفياغرا والسياليس والحبوب الصينية الطبيعية التي تساعد على زيادة الجنس والأهم من كل ذلك منافسة الرجال العرب للتيوس العربية على أكل زرعة الزلوع التي تظهر في جبال سورية ولبنان.. وأخيرا نرى بأن الدراسة نتائجها صحيحة لأن ما ينفقه العرب على تنشيط نشاطهم الجنسي يفوق كل أمم الأرض فقد بينت دراسة حديثة ان السعوديين ينفقون 15 بليون دولار على الأدوية والأعشاب الجنسية.. واضح جدا بأن العرب مهتمون في تنشيط البنية التحتية واهملوا البنية الفوقية التي يوجد بها الفكر.. والله يساعدنا لم نفلح في شيء

Site Counter

As you can see on the right, I've just added a Site Counter to track the number of visitors to the old blog. In the past, I used to rely on Blogger.com's BStats service where I would log on and read all kinds of statistics on site usage and traffic (I sound like my old boss!) without the need to put a flashy counter on the site announcing how many visitors have come and gone.

Well, for reasons that don't quite make sense, Blogger.com has discontinued BStats. The other site traffic analyzers are too dull, so I've decided - what the hell? - lets just put up a site counter and be done with it.

So let's crank up the pathetically low site visitor numbers, shall we? Of course I could just refresh all day and jack them up myself, but that would be cheating... and it's Ramadan :-P

اعلم ان اسطوانة "عيال عم الشيخ سلمان" اصبحت مملة، وربما اصبح وقعها ثقيلا على السمع خصوصا ان البعض حاول ان يعزفها بآلات وبأدوات مشبوهة. لكن هيه. . الطبالون والزمارون لا يكلون ولا يملون، والعزف دائما يتجدد. واذا خلصنا او تهيأ لنا انا خلصنا من عيال عم الشيخ سلمان فاليوم اتونا "عيال عم الشيخ عذبي". واذا كان عيال عم الشيخ سلمان شيوخ رياضة فالمصيبة ان عيال عم الشيخ عذبي شيوخ امن دولة. يعني يمكن عيال عم الشيخ سلمان يطقون كرة، او هم والله العالم يتوهمون ذلك، بس عيال عم الشيخ عذبي والعياذ بالله يطقون اوادم. وليس افضل ولا اجرأ من رجال امن الدولة على بني آدم.

تهديد الشيخ عذبي فهد الاحمد المزعوم لـلطليعة وللعاملين فيها ليس من المفروض ان يمر بسلام. لا من قبل الحكومة ولا من قبل مجلس الامة ولا حتى من قبل الاندية والهيئات الرياضية. وفي الواقع فانه من الغرابة الا يثير امر مثل هذا ردود فعل نيابية وحكومية تتوافق وخطورته، والاغرب من كل هذا ان نواب مجلس الامة الباحثين باصرار وعناد عن مبررات لاستجواب الوزراء لا يجدون في استخدام البعض لجهاز امن الدولة لترويع المواطنين او تهديد الخصوم تعديا على الحريات وانتهاكا للدستور وإخلالا بالنظام او على الاقل اساءة لاستخدام الوظيفة العامة.

لو كان الشيخ عذبي يهدد او يتوعد بصفته الشخصية او حتى بصفته شيخا من ابناء الاسرة الحاكمة لهان الامر. وربما اصبح او تم اعتباره قضية شخصية بينه وبين من هددهم. لكن الشيخ عذبي هو نائب رئيس جهاز امن الدولة، لذا فان التهديد هنا ليس شخصيا والوعيد هنا ليس اسريا رغم خطورة ذلك. هذا يعني ان الحكومة هي التي تهدد وان الدولة هي التي تتوعد المواطنين وتنحاز بوضوح الى بعض ضد بعض. بل وفقا لمزاعم الطليعة ايضا فان الشيخ عذبي كان يستغل جهاز امن الدولة للتجسس على خصومه او على من يتجرأ على انتقاد "عيال عمه" او اخوانه من المتسلطين او بالاحرى اللاصقين كالطفيليات بالجسم الرياضي.

انا اعتقد ان على الاسرة ان تختصرها وهي قصيرة.. مثل ما امرت عيالها بعد حل مجلس 1976 بالسيطرة على الرياضة. . . المفروض اليوم بعد تنامي المد الديموقراطي ان تطالبهم بالانسحاب.

NBK's new ad for Watani Online is so obviously a low-budget version of their previous بنكي الوطني campaign, and we all know how they worship at the altar of the cost-cutting gods!

The most disturbing is the one which compares picking a bride with selecting a مطّارة شاي. I really don't know what to make of that..

شهر الكسل

شهر رمضان في الكويت أصبح للأسف شهر النوم والكسل، ويا لسوء حظ المسكين الذي يحاول انجاز أي معاملة لدى أي من الجهات الحكومية. الموظفين الذين لم يعملوا بجد أصلاً أيام الفطر نراهم يتخذون الصيام والعبادة ذريعة لكسلهم، وهم في الحقيقة لا شافوا العبادة ولا عرفوها. كل المسألة كسل وعسارة من جراء حرمانهم من الشاي والسجائر وسندويشات الفلافل اليومية

في عدد اليوم من جريدة الوطن ، موضوع عن هذه الظاهرة السلبية ولقاءات مع بعض رجال الدين حثوا فيها عباد الله الكويتيين على العمل والنشاط أثناء الشهر الفضيل لأن العمل عبادة وخدمة المواطنين واجب

قد لا أتفق مع آراء شيوخ الدين في معظم الأحوال لكن لا بد هنا أن أقف مع "التخروعة الدينية" حتى يستحي الموظفون على وجوههم، ولو أني لا أعتقد شخصياً أن الكلام يفيد معهم حتى لو هددناهم بجهنم وبئس المصير

1. Is it me or is there an increase in the number of trucks, cement mixers and tractors roaming the streets and roads during peak driving times?

The clip, directed by video vet Phil Harder, features "Whale Rider" star Keisha Castle-Hughes as an Arab-American girl who is fed up with the anti-Arab sentiments she encounters in everyday life. The video concludes with Castle-Hughes' character fantasizing about exploding a bomb in an airport as a result of her frustrations. ...

A spokesman for a leading car dealership (the one with the knockout showroom!) has declared that the private sector provides many opportunities for young Kuwaitis to find meaningful and rewarding jobs but that many Kuwaiti youths turn their noses at jobs they feel are "beneath them". He also laments that government jobs pay more for less actual work, which makes them more attractive.

In an other story, a Kuwaiti masters degree candidate just presented his thesis on "Social obstacles that prevent Kuwaiti women from working and volunteering":

هلال رمضان

We're all familiar with the ancient tradition of waiting for the first sighting of the Ramadan crescent by some guy in the middle of the desert. A more recent tradition has been the annual guessing game we play to see who gets it right each year; the scientists/astronomists who can predict the exact second the crescent appears for decades to come, or the religious figures who want it done the old-fashioned way because... well, because they say so!!

I personally think it's a quaint tradition and should continue as part of the whole Ramadan experience, but I don't think it should precede science and technology. And besides, why should we bother when we're just going to fast when Saudi Arabia tells us to anyway?

Al-Hayat - CENSORED

I just discovered that although Al-Hayat prints a local edition through Al-Seyassah, if you go to any newsstand on any day you will NOT find that day's edition, only the previous day's. Even subscribers now get their copies a day late.

A quick call to the Al-Hayat subscription office was in order, and guess what? I was told that a little over a week ago Al-Hayat printed some story that someone higher up didn't like, so now every morning a copy of Al-Hayat is sent to the Ministry of Misinformation for review before it's released to subscribers and newsstands!!

And with the customary "speed and efficiency" of the ministry censors, by the time they're done scouring the paper for any offensive articles, the delivery vans will have called it a day and the editions reach their destinations with the next delivery run.

Don't believe me? Go see for yourselves! I'm just surprised that Al-Hayat and the other papers haven't raised a big stink over this..

Look! Women Can Vote!

Women voters were out in full force at yesterday's co-op board elections in Rawdha and Surra, and they voted overwhelmingly for the very people (i.e. Islamists) who insist on denying women their right to vote in Parliament! Isn't it ironic.... don't you think?

In the introduction to her interview with Oprah, Zain Al-Sabah admitted that our "democracy is kind of lopsided" and said that she didn't "mind at all taking it one step at a time".

I'm sorry, but I do mind! Aren't women sick of hearing this "one step at a time" nonsense? How many "steps" are required anyway, and at what pace? If Britain and the USA took hundreds of years to give women the vote, it's because those were different times back then. Nowadays, information is so readily available that there is simply no excuse for "not being ready" other than one's own ignorance. After all the years of progress in every aspect, if Kuwait is "not ready" for women's political rights - NOW in 2004!! - then it never will be.

So Zain, if you're reading this, and you're still OK with the women's vote coming "one step at a time".. at the rate it's going you may not be around to see it!

Kuwait on Oprah

Remember back in July/August when there were rumors flying around town that Oprah Winfrey was coming to Kuwait for an interview? As you all know, it turned out it was just her crew who were here to shoot some local footage for a series she's doing called "Women at 30" in which she interviewed thirty 30-year old women from around the world, including Kuwait.

I don't know if MBC has shown it yet, but here's an introduction.

Secret Drinkers

Inspired by Mad M2000's amazing post today, and by Mosan's blog since... well, since Day 1 actually, I'm curious about the following:

All you guys out there who enjoy a good drink (or 10)... Do your fathers drink? If they do, do you ever drink with them or do you continue the standard hypocrisy of not drinking in front of them out of "respect"?

I would understand if your fathers were strict conservatives or at least non-drinkers, but what's the harm in bonding with your dad over a cold beer or a bottle of wine, whether here on the weekends or if/when you're traveling with him?

American Idiot - CENSORED!

I haven't been paying attention to FM 99.7 lately, mainly because I've been listening to American Idiot nonstop on the trusty old iPod, and also because the best hours to tune in (yes, they do exist) are usually when I'm at work.

But I had an outside meeting this morning, and on my way there I switched on the radio and was thrilled to hear the crashing opening guitar licks of my current favorite song. I cranked it up only to be shocked that the word "American" had been edited (i.e. censored) out of every verse!!

WHAT THE FUCK?! Are we Kuwaitis supposed to be more offended by this song than actual Americans? It has been playing on American radio stations for months and the video is a big hit on MTV, so what's with this extra sensitivity? Does some misguided fool at the Ministry of Dis-Information think that the US will pull its troops out of Kuwait if they hear us play this song on our radio stations?

And if it's so damn offensive to our delicate ears... WHY PLAY IT IN THE FIRST PLACE??!

Bush is a Girl!

I found this thing from Bill Maher, the acid-tongued comic and talk show host. It's funny because it's true:

Because, plainly, he acts like a girl.

Not a woman -- a girl. Not a week goes by when John Kerry isn't attacked because he said something that hurt someone's feelings. According to Bush spokesmen, Kerry lost the first debate because of his "new insult" to our allies when he said the coalition wasn't genuine. Poland had Lithuania over for a debate party that night, and now they can't look at each other without crying.

All of the attacks on Kerry involve his thoughtless words at the expense of someone's feelings: He hurt the Iraqi prime minister when he said he wasn't legitimate -- the bitch; he hurt the troops in Iraq when he said it was the wrong war at the wrong time -- men!; he hurt the Vietnam vets when he totally broke the girl code and told everybody about their atrocities. And worst of all, he hurt the president's feelings when he laughed at Whoopi Goldberg's jokes.

And another thing about John Kerry: He uses Botox, he spends too much time on his hair, and he's two-faced -- flip-flopper! "Also, I bet John Kerry didn't deserve any of those medals. I woulda gone to stupid old Vietnam, but I wanted to be a stay-at-home soldier."

Excuse me, this president isn't resolute: He's on the rag.

He stopped having press conferences, which is basically saying, "I'm not talking to you." He couldn't testify before the 9/11 commission without having a man by his side. I'll bet when they have lunch, Cheney orders for him. And then he just eats the salad.

They say Kerry is too sensitive, but they're the ones who turn everything into a big baby mama drama. Bush is the one who looked all crampy and pouty last week: "It's hard work" -- I kept waiting for him to say, "If you don't like how I do your shirts, then iron them yourself."

He even ran for president like a girl in 2000. Promising to "restore dignity to the Oval Office." What man gives a rat's ass about restoring an office? A real man thinks the Oval Office lost all its integrity the day Monica Lewinsky stopped coming in there to blow the president.

And then, in the one area -- I'm talking about Iraq -- where he could use being a little in touch with his feminine side, he acts like the typical stupid male, who gets himself lost, won't admit it, and won't stop and ask for directions. No matter that we've already taken 10 wrong turns and are heading for what seems like it could be a cliff -- no, he's not stopping, not listening to anybody, not reading the instructions, just insisting, "Please, I know what I'm doing."

2. Call on Me - Eric Prydz: More '80s cheesiness in the video for this track that uses the chorus from Steve Winwood's classic "Valerie".
3. People Have the Power - Patti Smith: This rousing 1988 rock anthem from the venerable poet/rocker still gets my adrenalin pumping, and reading about R.E.M. and Springsteen performing it live last week at the "Vote for Change" concert made it even more relevant today.

Exhibition

Sorry folks, I've been trapped at an exhibition that we're participating in at work. I hate these things but they're a necessary evil of marketing and promotion, I guess.. and at least we have the most striking booth of all of the participants, and the most interesting too. But that does not relieve any of the boredom that sets in after repeating yourself for 4 days in a row!

The first day was a mob scene with people swarming all over the hall just to grab some giveaways, with no interest at all in the exhibition itself. Fortunatelyt, here are enough colleagues and friends from other companies to keep us entertained, especially with some of the weird characters that show up with the most bizarre questions.

It's all over tonight, and not a minute too soon!!

Fake News

Wouldn't it be great if we had a Kuwaiti version of Comedy Central's The Daily Show, with fake news and parodies of real news all the time? Imagine the rich material that a local version could cover. Everything from corrupt government officials, to MPs who didn't finish school, to homegrown "terrorists-in-waiting", to استقبالات الشيوخ to ... my God, the possibilities are endless!!

And just like Jon Stewart, the Kuwaiti host should be a tough interviewer with a wicked sense of humor. He could have people as varied as عواد برد or فجر السعيد or عواطف الحاي and rip them apart for their crimes against humanity and good taste (respectively).

I nominate Abu Hafs for the job. But does he have a photogenic TV face? And will he promise not to ask the guests how many times they go to the bathroom? ;-P

حبس البنات

This is something for all you girls/women/ladies out there..

No doubt, at some point in your lives, you were not "allowed" to stay at home alone while your parents were away. Wherever they went, you had to go. Your vacations were planned around theirs, and not the other way round. Sometimes your resentful brother had to stay home with you, just because البنت ما يصير تظل بروحها في البيت even past the age of 21, when she's already driving and working, etc.

What is the parents' justification for this? Are they being over-protective, afraid that something bad might happen to the daughter while she is home alone, (burglary, assault, etc.)? Or do they simply not trust their daughter alone at home, afraid she might turn their basement into a debauched sex club?
