All day yesterday, I avoided discussing the shooting of those poor women and childen at the checkpoint in Najaf because it was just too painful. Their death was tragic and senseless.

I understand how nervous the soldiers at that checkpoint must have been, after a suicide attack had killed 4 of their comrades in the same spot, but it seems that a warning shot in the air could have averted a human tragedy.
