Death at IKEA

No, not the IKEA branch here in Kuwait, but in Saudi Arabia, of all places! The opening of the country's first IKEA store in Jeddah resulted in the deaths of 3 people who were crushed to death in a stampede of shoppers eager to get their hands on modern Swedish pine furniture! It seems IKEA staff are also trained paramedics... Who knew!

And on that note, I will direct you to the lyrics to a snappy little song about IKEA by Jonathan Coulton, a software designer who moonlights as a rock singer. You can also download it here.

  1. The Villa Moda sales do result in stampedes, but of the كشخة kind with women decked out in the clothes and shoes they bought outside Kuwait so they can show off to other women.

It has become a spectator sport, and can either be quite entertaining or a social study. Go have lunch at the restaurant on the first day of the sale. It has to be seen to be believed!

  3. I didn't realize it was old news until after I posted it. Did it happen while I was away on vacation?

Anyway, it was an excuse to tell you all about the IKEA song.

Funny how their cars cost over KD 30,000 and yet they will wait for the sale to go crazy!

  6. Villa Moda should serve "real" cocktails and open the long awaited Botox bar....that will generate more business and make shopping there a more enjoyable quest....imagine those stampeding girls with their moms...all liquored up and botoxed.....hmm..thinking about it now ...just forget it....We dont need any new security council resolutions.

  9. Well I don't think that the catch was about the quality of IKEA's furniture, its about the freaky, stupid, dumb incident.

I really don't understand what kind of life they are leading in our next door country! They have weird stories, dramatic stupid incidents. IKEA ... It always seemed to be safe for kids and grownups, and now they have deaths there! Its incomprehensible.

  12. Are we supposed to laugh, or cry? Ill9ara7a I wanna laugh 'cuz it's just so ridiculous. Then again I want to cry because it's also very embarrassing. They, as arabs are portraying a bad example of us to the rest of the world, which includes other arabs. True, stampedes are common here as well but never to the point where anyone actually gets hurt. Seriously that's so sad.

By the by, I came across a website the other day of americans living in Kuwait. They actually make their own alcohol. I think they said something about mixing in water, yeast, and some fruits. Then storing it for a few days in a dry place. Ya7layl-hum walla, they're so self-efficient, unlike some.

  13. Hello! im sorry to burst your bubble, but during...errr..the dry season (ahahhaha) most of "us" make our own licor. plus its more fun when it comes out the *right* way. :P or you could just buy it, like some people (geez i wonder who??!)

  14. I also picked up on this one http://kiwi_nomad.blogspot.com/ some time ago when I got around to posting.
Life-sized Swedish model posters possible cause of the attraction - good one. Mind you anything resembling the female form not covered from head to toe in black would do it.
It was certainly an eye-opener to the Saudi mentality when I noticed packaging for swimming pool toys (sold in Bahrain of all places) with pre-pubescent girls in their swimming costumes black markered out.

  15. They also blacked out the upper body of the mermaid on the cover of the animated Disney movie "The Little Mermaid"

    Poor Ariel :(

  16. sadly,in Saudi Arabia poverty is more rampant than in Kuwait and we should not laugh so blatanly about their economic woes.
