Kuwait on Oprah

Remember back in July/August when there were rumors flying around town that Oprah Winfrey was coming to Kuwait for an interview? As you all know, it turned out it was just her crew who were here to shoot some local footage for a series she's doing called "Women at 30" in which she interviewed thirty 30-year old women from around the world, including Kuwait.

I don't know if MBC has shown it yet, but here's an introduction.

  1. "she wanted to marry a commoner instead of following the old Kuwaiti tradition of marrying your cousin"

what the hell ! thats a bedion tradition , not an old kuwaiti tradition , i have 6 uncles and you know how many married there cousin ? if you gussed 0 then your right , same goes for my aunts , not to mention my mother grandfather and father grandfather didn't marry there cousins , stop mixing bedion stuff with kuwaiti stuff , whats next ! an old kuwaiti tradition that the cousin can't marry unless her cousin clear her ?!?!

and why interview a woman from al-sabah family ? don't we have great woman not from the ruling family ?

oh wait maybe they are , thats why we get stuff like this

  3. I want to give her the benefit of the doubt. I'm hoping she said a lot more useful things than what the media typically focuses on.

  4. Damn it! I Havent heard anything about this Ramadan's VM Koftan collection? I just feel so naked

I really want to know , I dont want to fly to Milan and ask/beg Prada for one. They might reject me , being a commoner who doesnt have a pool or a theatre in his house.

I'm going to sleep now...and as I told Zaydoun earlier today...wake me up when VM's big Sale starts. I need a Gucci shoes so I can look good while ...kicking some butt

Good night all and God bless Prada

  5. i can't believe that elzain said somthing like that "a commoner","You don't have to worry about your college education, so why not spend that money on your daughter's wedding gown?" what the hill??? i have to c the interview because i'm definat that she wouldn't say such thing because she's surrounded with very well educated women where she knows that's not the case for all Q8y women..."commoner" this is a diffrent story i can say i'm really disappointed from what i read that's why i insist to c the intreview

  6. The word commoner could've been phrased differently haha but yeah that sucks that we're all being represented by her, more or less. Yalla hard luck :)

  7. The word "commoner" is still used by the British royal family, and other royal families across Europe, to refer to anyone even أكبرها وأسمنها outside the royal bloodline. Example, Princess Anne married the commoner Captain Mark Phillips. Yes it sounds antiquated, but then so are they.

I will withhold judgement on Zein until I see the interview in its entirety.

  10. What I can't understand is, WHY FROM THE ROYAL FAMILY?!?!?! I assume that the purpose of the show is to give an idea about the women in different countries right? Then why meet Zain if it was possible to meet other women such as Sarah Akbar (the only woman who participated in extinguishing the fires of the oil wells) or Shaikha Al-Bahar (GM-Corporate Banking NBK), or other women who participated in politics (Nouriyah Al-Saddani, Loulwa Al-Mulla, and Dr. Sajda Al-Abdili.. etc). I have nothing against Zain (I don't even know her) but I agree with what some of you have said that Zain might have provided her way or perspective of women in Kuwait from the ?rich girl? angle. However, and as what Zaydoun has said, we should see the episode before judging it?

  13. mosan mosan..
ya your right, I forgot about that age thing. Still I think that oprah show should've selected a woman other than from the royal family and I do belive there are women who are more qualified than zain.

  16. What is this controversy about Sabah Ruling family females marrying "commoners"?

    1. It happens a lot now.

    2. You keep calling them Royal. They have never been that. Kuwait is not a Kingdom. Are you promoting that it should be??

    ReplyDelete
  17. I know it happens a lot, I think we're pissed because Oprah made a big deal out of it.

As for kingdoms, I don't see the difference. A family that has been ruling for the past 200 years or so, might as well be royal... anyway you get the drift

  18. Time to clarify things...
We all have seen that episode. If not, here's a link:-

First of all, it was not Zain's problem of being featured on Oprah's Show. Blame the old *censored* and her staff for choosing Zain. In fact Zain had mentioned some good points, for women that is, and she did very well especially when she handled the "Men domination" and "Cousins marriage" questions.

2nd of all, From what I did see she admited to Oprah that her husband is a commoner but she NEVER said it herself. Besides, who the hell would count her husband as a commoner? He's a wealthy man (Alla yzeeda) and they both suit each other.

The only part I hated is when they concentrated on womens right to vote. I mean yeah it's been a big deal for a long time but women have great rights in Kuwait. Why do they want to vote? It's not like they would elect someone for president! Nor even the person they would elect would be much of a help to them. All those greedy parliament members are there for their own benifit.

Let's not skid off topic here about Kingdom issue. It was a mis-phrase. Well I hope so. =/
I guess when CIA mentioned that Kuwait is a monarch, and were refering at it as a kingdom monarchy, nobody said anything.
