Kuwaiti Couture?

This one's for all you ladies, because "you gotta lotta 'splainin' to do!"

In our new blogger NYChick's rant on my post from before the Eid, she went off the rails on several issues that annoy her in Kuwait, most of which we've talked about before... But the one that caught my attention is this latest phenomenon/fad/هبّة of some delusional young Kuwaiti women who call themselves "fashion designers", but are really just some untrained girls with spare time, a sketch pad, a few Filipina seamstresses, and unlimited access to some of the "less than tasteful" fabrics from البلوكات. The majority - if not all - of these "designers" specialize in درّاعات (i.e. nothing any sane woman would wear in public) as evidenced by their ads in the papers before Ramadan to announce their new collections just in time for all the private social gatherings and غبقات to come. And of course, the ones that hit the jackpot are the designers who manage to dress Kuwait TV's various female personalities during Ramadan, thus inflicting their eye-sore designs on an unsuspecting audience beyond our borders.

From what I understand, a small number of these young ladies are actually pretty good but just need to refine their technique a bit; a few courses in a specialized fashion academy wouldn't hurt. But the overwhelming majority of them are just plain terrible and tasteless, and are only supported by their friends and family out of obligation, and of course by their colleagues at the ministries since that's apparently where they show their "creations".

Don't get me wrong.... a local fashion industry and young Kuwaiti talent are definitely things to be encouraged, but only if done right and with proper guidance and training.

And yet.... now that we're on this subject.... how come NONE of these so-called designers make day clothes that women can wear to work, for example?

  1. as i understand from the family talk , around 90% isn't worth the price tag
but the problem is that most of the ones you go to are the ones who you are personaly invited to , either a relative or a friend , and since this is kuwait with close ties and every thing can make people angry at you , you go there so they don't say that you didn't go and ignore your next dinner / wedding / birth ..etc , and then because you went there its bad manner not to buy anything , so you end up buying an ugly dara'a , which is going to be buried deep in the closet of your house never to be seen again

  2. its interesting you know..for example, im in canada right now and have been for almost a year now. about a week before ramadan, a lady from kuwait called me (in canada) and asked how i was doing bla bla ramadan kareem so on and so fourth; the butter of the call being if i would tell my mother, aunts, grandmother, etc. to go over to this lady's house to see the new dara'as she just imported, its a brand new shipment from God knows where...she got my number from a lady in the canadian embassy in kuwait! The extent to which these people will go to make a quick dinar! The phone call probably costed her a nice dinar or so atleast!

A friend of mine has a galary and one of the ways to make useful of the space she rents it out to those obnoxious so called designers , you cant imagine Z how zigan the things the make and sell( halaga la abo moza). to my own surprise, one day I went on an official visit and I found a sign on the entrance reading NO Men Allowed( can you imagine the extend those bitches go to).
At the end there should be an United Nations Fashion Police monitoring those bitches or . exterminate them completly. We don?t need more halga in Kuwait

  7. Hey, I'm new here, but I just wanted to say that I know of quite a few females that aren't into that dara3a desinging stuff. Some are actually studying at prestigous fashion schools and others design everyday clothing. I guess the problem is that they don't publicize themselves as much as the other woman, because they aren't out to get attention but actually love what they do.

  8. Bonzi, welcome... that's very encouraging.

But are you talking about the chubby one who's on TV all the time? Kuwait's answer to Coco Chanel and Donna Karan?

  9. Oh no Z, this one is not chubby this one is officially FAT and it?s not the ?hot fat? that I refer to all the time ? it?s the disgusting fat.

Just know, When my T-shirts hit the market I won?t be calling myself a ?fashion designer?.

  12. Mosan i do have a valid point. if we let some un-educated un-cultured fool (most of our MPs..lol) decide then everyone is cool; whereas if we have someone who is the opposite, say for example, ME, or ME, or ME :P then the greater majority of q8 would be halaga..

  13. Hi every one I'm new here , but I really liked the subject coz its sooo realistic un like the magazines that compliment every design even though it was the ugliest in the world . Why is saying the truth about an ugly design makes you either bad or you end up bieng told that you have no taste at all ,or don't understand fashion .I've always wanted to ask : why is it that when women wear simple chic at an event with simple makup they're considered "embehdelah !"
And when she goes to the "jamieah-supermrket" should wear a late design trainig suit of course preffered with a brand name for one of the following :T-shirt,bag,shoes,watch..ect.If not she's out of fashion .
About the latest called designers , I have girls i know that make very very ugly stuff they call dra3as and thier friends would say "wow thats fantastic - wonderful you are born to design ! " imagine: the prices of the nightmares they've created ?! Honestly to me its yuck!so I aviod going to these exibitions that are simillar to clowns carnivals .Because of that I'm not considered as a good friend, which the hell with the friendship that is not based on honesty when I look like the "Phntom of the Operah "!

  19. The dress is perfect for my sisters! I was worried about sizing because they are adults. I used the sizing chart provided by the vendor and they fit everyone very well.
