Plastic Fantastic

A long, long time ago... when people needed a nose-job or a face lift for purely cosmetic reasons (i.e. not from an accident), they would fly as far away as they could afford, to have their surgery in total secrecy and recuperate in peace away from nosy relatives and the rest of gossip-hungry Kuwaiti society.

Today, that stigma has all but disappeared among Kuwaitis, and plastic surgery has become a normal subject to be discussed at the dinner table. "Who did your nose?" is as normal as "Where are you going this summer?". Today's most popular guessing game (after guessing bloggers identity, of course) is guessing what a person "has had done". It's reached the point where even naturally attractive people are now subject to scrutiny, because people no longer believe that anyone can be naturally beautiful or handsome!

What brought this on, you ask? I've been fascinated by the hit TV show "Nip/Tuck". It is totally addictive; like "Six Feet Under" but for plastic surgeons instead of undertakers.

Would you have plastic surgery to maintain your youthful looks later on in life? What - if anything - would you fix right now?

  2. I LOVE Nip/Tuck"

I don't think I ever would.I sometimes think that maybe lifting things a decade from now might be good but then again, any surgery is risky.I'd hate to be one of the 5% who do have serious side effects just for the silly reason of looking a little younger.Unless you have the neck done too I think you can always tell.I'm fairly happy with the features I got so changing them doesn't interest me that much.

  3. nip/tuck is one of those shows you keep saying 'this is the last episode I watch tonight' and then when it's over you say 'oh ok just one more'and before you know it it's 3am and you have no idea how to get off the couch...very addictive. Are you done with the first season?
You get the feeling these days that if you haven't had something fixed that some people think you are 'muhmila', like 'you could have fixed that why haven't you bothered?'. It's a bit weird.
I like my wrinkles and watching the way my face changes, I hope I don't start hating things about myself in the future.
    How 'bout you Zaydoun?

  4. I admire people who would.. I think it takes courage.
    I wouldn't though.. I'm a coward!

    Zaydoun,
    Kindred spirit? I'm flattered :)

  5. I remember when you could outcast someone by just saying that the ad something done. No this disappeared (along with good nose jobs).
I love that old NYC socialite who looks like an alien from all the plastic surgery. I admired her boasting about it and now no one is giving er props. I dont even know her name. There's nothing wrong with it. Do it.

Actually, some peeps need it. So, why not?

  6. I don't think I would favor any surgery at the present time, but may be tempted into considering the options available once I have passed a certain age and felt the need to have something done (it might be after I have had my children).

The concept is spreading widely, but I have yet to meet someone who would publicly announce what she had done to herself.

Somehow I always believed that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" but with the change in people perceptions as to what they consider is beautiful? I believe that the whole issue is becoming superficial beyond belief. Not everyone is made 'perfect' yet a person needs to learn to live with what God has provided him or her.

  8. I love Nip/Tuck too...I'm so addicted to that show and of course I love all of HBO shows...

Now your topic is interesting I must say...I know some girls had breast reduction surgeries and nose jobs and I know they needed them...but some other plastic surgeries I can't really understand it honestly! I don't want to judge anyone but whatever happened to aging gracefully?
I think we should enhance our beauty but not alter it...that's how I personally feel about it...but hey it's a personal choice and some girls won't be happy unless they do it...but it becomes an addiction of some sort...today they'll get this done and tomorrow they'll get something else....ma adree it makes me wonder if we'll ever end up with plastic Barbie?s!
Anyways I'd like to leave you with this link of Dove ad campaign that I just love :) http://www.dove.com/real_beauty/advertising_age_092704.pdf

  10. And to answer the earlier question.. what would I fix if I really wanted to? Maybe my nose could use a little bit of reshaping, but nothing drastic

Otherwise.. as I grow older I will definitely make use of modern technology and I don't care what anyone thinks!

    AntiReason.. your comment is silent!

  14. This is very odd to me. I think maybe Kuwaitis are more interested in plastic surgery than americans? I know a couple of women in america who has mastectomies because they had breast cancer, and then they had reconstructive surgery after that. But I don't personally know anyone who has had anything elective done (not even botox). Of course we always hear about celebrities having plastic surgery, but I think a lot of them look a lot worse afterwards. I am really suprised that Kuwaitis are pro-surgery. I'm not judging. . It's just not what I expected when I started reading the comments.

  16. I don't see anything wrong with plastic surgery as an option to enhance a person's self-esteeem. (I'm not talking about boob jobs of course, those are scary. I agree with you mrsB. Take it out but don't put foreign objects it)

And yes, what I would do is probably get rid of those stretchmarks. Though, like mushmushi I was told that is not an option yet. gabooo6, I'd have to check that abdominoplasty.

devilisheya, I see your argument. But if plastic surgery makes a person feel better, why not?

  18. If anyone is interestd, Oprah has an episode next week which deals with plastic surgery addiction, an..
and speaking of celebrities...most of them look hideous now after having some work done, like scary Meg Ryan and puffy faced Lara Flynn Boyle, and Farrah Fawcett, oh boy. I don't know if the technology is at a level that would make you natural looking.
Although, despite the weird fashion sense, does Sabah have a deal with the devil? That woman is over 80 years old? Compare her to the disaster that is Joan Rivers.

  22. Kwtia: The ones that have broken my heart are Melanie Griffith, Meg Ryan and Mary Tyler Moore. The were absolutely gorgeous before surgery, and now they're fairly ugly. It's really sad. Supposedly they did it because it became hard for them to find work when they got older. If that is true, then shame on whoever is in charge of casting, because they would have been wonderful at any age.
