Free Press

According to the World Press Freedom Index for 2005, compiled annually by Reporters Sans Frontieres, Kuwait placed 85th on the list ahead of all Arab countries including Lebanon, which slipped to 108th position mainly because of the murder of journalist Samir Kassir and botched attempt on TV presenter May Chidiac's life which nevertheless mutilated her body.

The strange thing is that the report did not address Kuwait's "chart position" أحسن من اللي أردى مننا, nor did the translated story in Friday's Al-Qabas mention Kuwait at all. Maybe because No. 85 isn't anything to be proud of.

  6. Zaydoun: I think there is freedom of the press. The question is the political hypocrisy we see in the press. Who is the real benefactor by having a political affiliation of the governemnt? Do we consider the united states to have a free press environment? If so, why is the press so biased towards big business and zionist Israel? Bottomline its money for us. Money and business interests shapes our press. Unfortunately most of the population is biased because of money. Talk about releiving all personal debts. That will create a major economic instability, how agressive is the press against that?
Isin't it because certain idividuals might be releived of the several millions they took on loan?

  7. equalizer... of course we have relative freedom. In fact I think our press is quite strong in spite of its placing 85th

But we have a long way to go, and I would be very happy if we were headed in the right direction no matter how long it takes. But it seems that we're not
