Further to Islamist MP Tabtabai's outburst against showing female athletic event at the upcoming Olympic Games in Athens, it turns out we have our first female Kuwaiti athlete participating in the 200 metre running event. 16-year old Danah Al-Nasrallah will be representing Kuwait simply because she has her family's support, and therefore there's nothing the Islamists can do to stop her. The MIRACLE here is that the Kuwaiti Olympic Committee didn't bow down to pressure from Islamists to ban females athletes from going to the games. AND... she will be wearing - SHOCK! HORROR! - revealing athletic gear with her legs exposed!! I can't wait for the cries of indignation..
In other sports news, Kuwaits' under 18 tennis team led by Abdullah Moqadas won the gold medal at the Arab Tennis Tournament that took place in Cairo. Here's to a bright tennis career and onto the international tennis circuit.
It's certainly a relief to see some good Kuwaiti sports news for a change. God knows our football team has been a national embarrassment. But then, should we really be surprised at the decline of sports in Kuwait when every other aspect of life in Kuwait has been on a downward spiral since the 1980's?
maybe the newspaper will put an article without any pics

hwkw... sadly a lot of people care what she wears, and thats' what's so annoying
ReplyDeletewhat if she didn't wear revealing gear ? would not cheer for her ? the fact that her family agreed for her to go make me assume that she isn't going to wear anything revealing , if you read al-qabas issue of that day you will see that they had a picture of a woman wearing hijab and training , it could be her , or could be not , since the freaking athens director didn't want to zoom on kuwait time ( not to mention the time i waited for them , damn greek alphabet )
ReplyDeleteand i don't think he can object to her going there in the first place
I don't think it's about what she wears. Praticipating in the Olympics is the most important thing.
ReplyDeleteShe is not obliged to wear revealing gear. Remeber what Cathy Freeman, who won a gold medal in Sydney, was wearing. Click on the link to see her photo.

Why is everyone so pessimistic?
ReplyDeleteI remember Dana's participation got enough media coverage. In fact, it was on a few 1st pages!
I'm sure all of our atheletes will get the attention they deserve, specially the fact that they're so few. Of course some sports will get more attention than usual like the Shooters, because people in Kuwait follow up for ex. shooting and football rather than Running and Badminton! Its not about the gender or the clothes, its about the sports, lets not overanalyze this.
