رياضة مدرسية

كنت أتحدث صباح اليوم مع أحد المدراء الكبار في مقر عملي، ومن ضمن السوالف تطرقنا إلى الأنشطة الرياضية والاجتماعية التي كانت تنظمها النوادي الرياضية في أواخر الستينات وأوائل السبعينات وكان يشارك بها مديرنا آنذاك، وكيف كانت الأنشطة الاجتماعية مثل المسابقات والتومبولا* مختلطة بين الجنسين إلى حد ما وبالعفوية والاحترام التي تميزت بهما تلك الفتيرة الجميلة من تاريخ الكويت المعاصر

ثم فتحت القبس لأجد مقال عبداللطيف الدعيج عن انحسار مستوى الألعاب الرياضية والاهتمام بها في مدارس الكويت وانعكاس ذلك على اهتمام الشعب الكويتي بالرياضة بشكل عام، باستثناء كرة القدم طبعاً

لكن هناك عنصر هام لم يذكره الكاتب "لسبب ما" - يسوي نفسه ما يدري - والذي أعتقد شخصياً أنه السبب الرئيسي لتراجع الرياضة المدرسية في الكويت، وهو المد الديني المتشدد الذي جثم على صدورنا وسيطر على مؤسساتنا التربوية ليجعل من كل شيء حرام وينظر للرياضة نظرة الاحتقار لأنها تشغل الناس عن عبادة الله كما تزعم مشايخ الأصولية. انشغلت مدارسنا بتعليم نواقض الوضوء وعذاب القبر ولم تهتم لبناء الإنسان وتعليم الروح الرياضية فخرّجت لنا أجيال اما متزمتة أو كسولة، جل حركتها البدنية إما الذهاب إلى المسجد أو التسكع في المجمعات التجارية و الديوانيات

اذكر أيام طفولتي عندما كانت عمتي رحمها الله تلعب مع زميلاتها في فريق البنات لكرة الطائرة بنادي القادسية وأصبحت بعدها من أول المحاميات الكويتيات، وأعتقد أنه كان للرياضة تأثيراً ايجابياً في صقل شخصيتها... أين فرق البنات الرياضية اليوم؟ لقد بعثرتها رياح التشدد والتزمت تماماً كما قضت على كل شيء جميل في حياتنا

الله لا يغير علينا

أسمعها كثيراً.. وترفع ضغطي أكثر.. عبارة الله لا يغير علينا

قد تقال بعفوية وبحسن نية تامة لتشكر الخالق عز وجل على ما نحن فيه من خير ونعمة، والحمد والشكر واجب بلا شك... لكن ألا يحق لنا أن ندعو الله ليغيرنا إلى الأفضل؟ ليس من باب الطمع أو الجشع لكن من باب التطور والإرتقاء... فإذا كنا لا نريد من الله أن يغير علينا، لماذا - على سبيل المثال - ننتخب نواب ونعين وزراء وحكومة؟ أليس واجبهم تطوير بلدنا وتحسين معيشتنا؟ إذا لا نريد من الله أن يغير علينا خليهم يرجعون بيوتهم ويفكونا من لغوتهم

العبارة هذه تقلقني عندما تأتي على لسان أولي الأمر، مثل تصريح وزير الطاقة في صحف اليوم.. تقلقني لأنهم إذا كانوا لا يعون مدى خطورتها فتلك مصيبة وإذا كانوا يعون مدى الخطورة ويستمرون بها فتلك مصيبة أكبر. خطورتها تكمن في كونها رسالة غير مباشرة للشعب لتشغلهم عن الإرتقاء بأنفسهم والتخطيط لمستقبل أفضل لأنفسهم ولوطنهم، وما حالة اللامبالاة التي تعيشها غالبية الشعب الا نتاج هذا التفكير الضيق.... لا مجال هنا لسرد الكثير من أمور حياتنا في دولة الضوابط التي تحتاج إلى نسف كامل وليس تغيير فقط، وكل ما تكلمنا عنها يأتينا أحدهم ليقول - ربما عن غير قصد لكن تبعاً لعادة مكتسبة - الله لا يغير علينا

2. Students From Brighton Institute of Modern Music - My My: Don't ask... I just stumbled onto this song online, and I instantly fell in love with the killer chorus. They sound like an alt.rock version of the Fame academy.

Batman Begins

حضرت مساء أمس العرض الأول لفيلم الرجل الوطواط في سينما ليلى غاليري، وذلك تلبية لدعوة الأخ العزيز خالد ناصر الروضان رئيس شركة ام-نت راعية العرض. كان حفل العرض مريحاً جداً حيث سينما ليلى غاليري أنيقة للغاية وكراسيها في البلكون الأعلى مريحة ووثيرة تصلح لذوي الكروش وما أكثرهم في دولتنا. ذكرني الفيلم بأيام طفولتي ومجلات الوطواط المترجمة للعربية والتي كانت تطبع في لبنان أو مصر لا أذكر... أشكر الأخ خالد على دعوته الكريمة وأدعو إلى المزيد من هذه العروض الخاصة برعاية المؤسسات الكويتية الرائدة

And now for my review which I will do in English, because it's easier to spell the actors' names. And don't worry there will be no plot spoilers.

The new Batman Begins, directed by Christopher Nolan of Memento and Insomnia fame (2 great movies), is my type of summer blockbuster: dark, brooding and intelligent. It tells the story of how Batman came to be (I said no spoilers!), which is just as thrilling as his life as a crime fighter.

Having grown up watching reruns of the campy - POW! BAM! - Batman TV series from the 1960's, and devouring the Batman DC Comics as a youngster, Batman has always had a special place in my heart. I loved the first two big productions with Michael Keaton, sort of liked Batman Forever with Val Kilmer (who I can't stand!), and just refused to see Batman & Robin and Catwoman.

As kids, most of us read comic books for the action, cool gadgets and incredible superpowers that we all wished we had so we could beat up the kids that we didn't like at school . But we forget that they are mainly written and created by adults and are therefore full of very grown-up themes dealing with life, love, loss, good vs. evil and a whole range of human emotions.

Batman Begins is a magnificent interpretation of these themes in the tradition of superior comic movies like X-Men and Spiderman, which resonated so much with audiences of all types because they didn't just focus on the action. It stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman and he brings just the right mix of charm, tension and seething revenge to the part. The mostly British cast, including Gary Oldman as - GASP! - a good guy, is superb... although I get the feeling Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman are just playing themselves. And it must be Liam Neeson's year (after Kinsey and Kingdom of Heaven) because he totally lights up the screen with his presence.

In the film, Gotham City is in the grip of a depression, with poverty and crime everywhere. The city is held hostage by a group of thugs, and corruption is rampant. At one point I found myself wondering what would happen to Kuwait if - GOD FORBID!! - the oil ran out; would we sink to this level of decay? Well, we've got the corruption bit finessed to an art form... anyway, I digress.

My only quibble was with the new Batmobile, because it isn't as sleek and sexy as the original. The only people who will like it are Hummer drivers (click.. it's funny!)

Verdict: Do not miss it! The censors haven't touched a thing, except a chaste kiss at the very end which is more than I can say for the butchering of Mr. & Mrs. Smith last week. Oh, and we had the extra benefit of watching it last night without the distraction of badly translated subtitles in huge letters that eat up the screen!

Memo to KNCC: The Batman Begins website states that the film will be shown in IMAX theatres in the US and UK. Please surprise us by not blowing the opportunity to do the same here.

Global Voices Online

Global Voices Online is a website dedicated to giving a voice to bloggers from around the world. Its primary mission is "To call attention to the most interesting conversations and perspectives emerging from citizens? media around the world by linking to text, audio, and video blogs and other forms of grassroots citizens? media being produced by people around the world".

I first heard about this site last Sunday night, while watching a special CNN discussion on blogging (thanks Mosan and Sheba - yes Mosan is alive!) and its impact on journalism and world events. A quick glance through Global Voices Online will show you that Kuwaiti bloggers are missing in action. So this is a call to the guys at Safat to help us get on board. I'd do it myself but I have no clue how!

Back to the CNN program - Blogging - The Fifth Estate. It was a very interesting and lively discussion that revealed, among other things:

1. Blogging is changing the way people see the news and will soon be held to the same standards as journalism, thus taking the fun out of it. I firmly believe that if you want responsible journalism, go buy a newspaper instead.
2. Blogs and other online discussion forums have become a valuable source of marketing intelligence, where opinions regarding products or events are monitored and gathered.
3. Popular blogs can be serious money makers. Is the figure on that site counter high enough for advertisers? Come on people, show me some love!!
4. There is some very sophisticated software that allows your ISP to monitor your every word, trace your blog back to your IP address, and report you to the authorities if they feel like it. In other words, no matter how anonymous you think you are.. YOU'RE NOT. I suppose that explains the disappearance of Abu Hafs and God knows who else..

I didn't catch the CNN program from its beginning, so if anyone has recorded it I would really appreciate a copy.

لذلك بمناسبة اقتراب موسم البرحي اخترت لكم موضوع عن نجاح مجموعة باحثين اسرائيليين في زرع نخلة من طعــامـــة عمرها 2000 سنة

عودة إلى كرة القدم... لاحظت صباح اليوم مقهى شيشة بقرب مطعم نوارة الأصلي في الشرق، تم تغيير اسمه إلى رونالدينو على اليافطة مع صورة مرسومة لرجل صعيدي ماسك الشيشة... مادري ليش.... أول سؤال خطر ببالي هو ليش ما سموا المقهى على أحد من لاعبيننا؟؟

يوم الخميس اللي طاف... رايح بنيدر عقب الغدا... الجو غبار ومو مال بحر... قلت خليني أمر على مجمع الكوت وأضيع وقت ويمكن أشوف فيلم في سينما المجمع

قصيت التذكرة ورحت أتمشى بالمجمع على ما يبدي الفيلم، ووصلت مطعم ميجانا اللبناني. خارج المطعم جنب محل زارا كان في شاب لابس دشداشة وغترة قاعد ورا كاونتر.. شفته مرتبك في محله وأنا مقبل على المطعم بس سويت نفسي مو شايفه.. دخلت المطعم وأنا أشوفه من طرف عيني يقوم يدخل وراي... وقفت في وسط المطعم أتفرج على الديكور والأثاث والمنظر على البحر الخ... مو بطال... والا الأخ جاي يكلمني ودار بيننا الحوار التالي

هو: عفواً اخوي... أساعدك بشي؟
انا: لا مشكور بس جاي أشوف المطعم
بس عفواً ممكن تتفضل معاي برة لأن المطعم بس للعائلات
وانت شنو شايفني جدامك؟
لا العفو لا تفهمني غلط

The big album of Summer 2005 is out!

1. Coldplay - X&Y: Not one bad song on the whole album. I'm in love with it already!
2. Royksopp - Only This Moment: Lush, electronic Nordic summer pop.
3. Oasis - Part Of The Queue: The only track I really liked from their new album. Why is it that whenever they put out a new release, I long for the amazing "What's The Story, Morning Glory?"
4. Ray La Montagne - Trouble: I didn't think singers like this newcomer existed anymore.
5. Jamiroquai - Feels Just Like It Should: Jay Kay moving on from his usual (and now tired) Stevie Wonder impressions to Sly Stone. Not bad at all.

This week's classic pick is Straight On by Heart. This track is from the late 70's when they were still a tight little hard rock band, before they turned into the big-haired screamers of the 1980's.

And if ever you've walked into a music store and had your head spin by the amount of "chill out" compilations, all of which sound and look the same.. you have to read this article.

Finally, get a load of Paul Anka (yes, him!!) and his new album of swing-band versions of 80's and 90's rock hits. His take on Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is priceless!

KNPC

Why wait till next week?

KNPC have updated their logo to the one you see here on their site. It's a bit primitive but then it's the least of their worries. There's a new prototype petrol station being built with this new logo in Shuwaikh near the Immigration Department إدارة الهجرة and it looks too depressing even before it's finished!

Especially when you compare it to this

I just want to cry whenever I pass by the Emarat stations around Dubai. And they've existed in this shape since at least 1998, if not before!

And what kills me is that Kuwait Petroleum is no stranger to proper brand management, just not here in Kuwait apparently. A visit to Italy, for example, breaks my heart when I see the shiny Q8 stations everywhere.

Brand Development Forum

I was fortunate to attend the Brand Development Forum that was held at Marina Hotel last Sunday and Monday. It was the first of its kind in Kuwait; these forums usually take place anywhere but here and I usually have to beg to go and the answer is always NO!

It was a very interesting forum and the time went by so quickly because this is a subject that I really love (in case you couldn't tell). We kicked off with a long speech by the organizers (yawn!) and then a presentation by BKME, the main sponsor, in which they explained the strategy behind their new brand image. I shall reserve comment on BKME's new brand mainly because it's been discussed before on Kuwaitism. However, I was very surprised - and offended - that they didn't bother to attend the whole forum or even send any of their marketing staff to attend. Their representative just gave his presentation and promptly left after that. Did they just think they got everything right and had nothing new to learn? Or were they afraid to discover how they totally screwed up the execution?!

Our lecturer was a very nice American lady from the American Banker's Association. She had a very New Yorker sensibility; imagine a female cross between Woody Allen and Richard Lewis and you get the picture. She was so New York Jewish I had pleasant flashbacks of my college days, and I certainly learned a lot from her.

So now I'm even more obsessed with branding than ever before. I'm totally aware that branding isn't just creating a cool logo. There has to be a solid promise behind the brand for it to mean something to the consumers and the general public.

Over the next few weeks, I will be randomly picking some very public Kuwaiti institutions that need some serious re-branding to discuss them with you.

KUWAIT CITY?In light of the country's recent decision to allow women to vote and hold public office, observers around the world have noted that Kuwait appears to have discovered the fairer sex. "The boys in Kuwait are really taking notice of how much the girls have changed over the country's long political winter," said Fouad Ajami, an expert in Arab affairs. "They're no longer shyly avoiding women they're not related to or clumsily shooting them for not wearing veils in public." Ajami added that he was not entirely surprised by Kuwait's discovery, given its long history of teasing women, calling them names, and stoning them to death for being unclean.

Now this would normally be the usual warped humor of The Onion, except that Fouad Ajami is a real person!!

Tech Glitch

As if my screwed up email at work wasn't enough, now the blog disappeared for a whole day. I didn't even check it yesterday.. but it should be OK now

Re-Branding Kuwait Airways

Dubai Airport last weekend. A variety of airlines from around the world lined up at the terminal gates. All of them looked shiny, fresh and new with bold graphics and bright colors. Somewhere in the middle of the line-up, Kuwait Airways stands there looking like a beggar outside a fancy wedding. So dull, so boring, so dusty...داثرة تضيق الخلق. The aircraft was a dinky Airbus 320 (I think) itself a cramped and uncomfortable plane.

The depressing sight of our national airline looking so bad got me thinking about the Kuwait Airways brand, and how it's been totally neglected and mismanaged. I won't even compare it to Emirates because that would be an exercise that will end in tears and raised blood pressure.

There are many world-class branding consultants who can easily turn Kuwait Airways around with a bold rebranding project; as the old Kuwaiti saying goes عط الخباز خبزك لو باق نصه. I suspect that Kuwait Airways - like many institutions in this country - is run by people who simply don't understand the power of branding and therefore do not appreciate its value and would never spend the money required to rebrand it effectively.

But Kuwait Airways is sorely in need of a total overhaul. The whole customer experience has to change. Everything from the planes to the tickets to the offices, the in-flight magazines, the menus, the uniforms, the signage, the website (piece of crap site if ever I saw one)... Of course all of the things I mentioned are nothing without revitalizing the Kuwait Airways image and perception in people's minds... and that will be the toughest task of all. Don't believe me? Read this from yesterday's Qabas..

إننا لا نحتاج للخوض في اطنان تقارير ديوان المحاسبة، ولا في الفضائح التي فاحت في جلسات مجلس الامة كي نكتشف من هي المرأة ومن هي الشاذية، فتجربة حجز مقعد وركوب الطائرة على متن كل من الخطوط الجوية البريطانية والخطوط الجوية الكويتية، كفيلة باكتشاف ذلك. فعند الحجز على الخطوط البريطانية التي لا تحتاج بها لواسطة لا عليك الا دخول الانترنت وعمل حجز للمقعد ومكانه ونوع الاكل وحجز خط الرجعة وتأكيده والدفع بكرت الائتمان، طبعا البريطانية تمتلك واحدا من اكبر الاساطيل في العالم، فمن نوع واحد فقط من انواع الطائرات فئة 747 صنف 400، تمتلك البريطانية 57 طائرة، بينما يصل عدد جميع طائرات الكويتية 17 طائرة فقط خمس منها خربانة لا تعمل. الكويتية تحتاج فيها الى واسطة ثقيلة كي تحجز اذا كنت على لائحة الانتظار والغريب انك اذا ركبت الطائرة وجدتها خالية. طبعا في الخطوط الكويتية عليك ان تتحمل خياسة نفس بعض المضيفات لأن وراءهن ?ظهر? اي سند من نوع الهامور الكبير الذي يقضي معظم وقته في يخته بالشاليه، وحتى لا يتعكر مزاج ظهر المضيفة التي لا يتجرأ اي راكب ان يمس طرف رمش عيونها او خيط التنورة القصيرة المرصوصة فإن رحلتها يمكن تحويلها من بنغلادش الى لندن، عن طريق كازينو ادارة الخدمات الجوية المسؤولة عن جداول طيران المضيفين. طبعا، اذا كنت جالسا في الخطوط الكويتية فلا يوجد احترام لفئات المقاعد، فبعد ان تقلع الطائرة يختلط الحابل بالنابل، فالدرجة الاولى تصبح خري مري اي سوق جمعة وينتقل الخدم مع معازيبهم، بينما في البريطانية ولا اكبر شارب يتجرأ ان يتعدى فئة مقعده. اما في المطار التعيس الذي عجزت الدولة في ترقيعه، فلا ندري من المسؤول عن تحويل الوان اللوحات الارشادية في المطار الى أنثوية وردية! ناااااعمه جدا الله يسلم قلبها، هل هو ذوق رئىس الطيران المدني أم اخوة رئيس الخطوط الكويتية؟

كتاب الضمير يتم اغتيالهم في وضح النهار في بلاد العار العربية. لم أكن على علم أن المرحوم شهيد الكلمة الحرة الكاتب سمير قصير هو زوج الإعلامية المميزة جيزيل خوري، إلى أن رأيت صورتها في صحف اليوم وهي عائدة إلى مطار بيروت... لا عزاء للكلمة الحرة فهي معرضة للإغتيال يومياً بأساليب أبتكرتها وتفننت بها دولنا المتخلفة

Playlist June 2 - 8

Sorry about last week's playlist no-show, but then I guess most of you didn't even notice... Starting today, I will occasionally post the playlist on Wednesdays since I will most likely - hopefully - have better things to do with my Thursdays..

1. Superthriller - Superthriller 1: This year's camp classic. If the Scissor Sisters can make it big then I don't see how this electro-funk band can't do the same. The whole album is great fun.
2. Mariah Carey - We Belong Together: A great voice is a terrible thing to waste, and she definitely wasted the past few years with crap material. However, this song is great and she sounds terrific.
3. The Magic Numbers - Forever Lost: Sunny, bright pop music.. like an alternative version of 60's group The Mamas & The Papas.. They even have a "weight challenged" female vocalist.
4. Turin Brakes - Fishing For A Dream: A beautiful folk song from this talented London-based duo.
5. Nelly Furtado - Grass Is Green: From her under-rated 2003 album; the part when the strings kick in is sublime.

This week's classic pick is Marvin Gaye's What's Going On? .. an R&B classic that is so suitable for the screwed up world we live in today.
