الإعلام للفنادق: لا حفلات غنائية لا آلات موسيقية
الصقر: انتهاك مرفوض للحريات الشخصية وللدستور

فوجئ المواطنون بما اقدمت عليه وزارة الاعلام عندما قامت بابلاغ الفنادق والمطاعم والمؤسسات السياحية التي رتبت برامجها لاقامة حفلات غنائية حية، وتعاقدت مع فنانين من داخل البلاد وخارجها، بمنع اقامة مثل هذه الاحتفالات، وكذلك منع استخدام الآلات الموسيقية والاكتفاء بأشرطة الكاسيت الموسيقية

ووصف النائب محمد الصقر هذا القرار بانه انتهاك للحريات الشخصية والدستور

كما وصفت الاوساط السياسية خطوة الوزارة بانها رضوخ جديد ومذل للمتزمتين. وقالت ان الوزير ابو الحسن قد خضع لمستجوبيه قبل ان يعتلي المنصة، هذا ما لم يكن توقيت الاستجواب هدفه منع هذه الحفلات

وشدد البعض على القول ان ابلاغ الفنادق والمرافق الترفيهية ذات الصلة بصورة شفوية، وعن طريق الهاتف، بقرار المنع يثير الشبهات ويعطي انطباعا بان الوزير يحاول استرضاء المستجوبين بأي وسيلة للرأفة به

واستغربت الاوساط المراقبة تناقض الحكومة، اذ بينما تعلن جهارا وتكرارا عن توجهات لتنشيط السياحة الداخلية والدفع بالمواطنين لقضاء العطلات في البلاد وتفعيل دور المؤسسات والمرافق الترفيهية، تقوم وزارة الاعلام بنسف هذه التوجهات

وتساءلت هذه الاوساط بنبرة تشاؤمية عن الوضع القادم من الايام اذ تستعد البلاد والمؤسسات والشركات والوكلاء لمهرجان هلا فبراير وفعالياته وتوقيع العقود جار على قدم وساق، فيما تؤكد وزارة الاعلام انها حجر عثرة امام اي انفتاح اقتصادي او حضاري

ومن جهته، انتقد النائب محمد الصقر بشدة قرار وزارة الاعلام بمنع الحفلات. وقال ان الكويت كانت دائما مجتمعا منفتحا كما ان حفلات اللهو البريء تشكل جزءا من تراثه التقليدي، وهو يرفض كل اشكال التزمت، هذا عدا ان الكويت كانت دائما مقصد كبار الفنانين العرب، وقد اقاموا الحفلات في ربوعها في العقود الماضية، وابرزهم محمد عبدالوهاب وام كلثوم وعبدالحليم حافظ وفيروز وغيرهم

واضاف الصقر: ان الشعب الكويتي يرفض تحويل الكويت الى دولة طالبان جديدة، وسائر التجارب التي ادت الى تدمير بلدانها، خصوصا ان قرارات الاعلام تطال الحريات الشخصية وتنتهك حقوق المواطن، وبالتالي تخالف الدستور، ولا يجوز لوزير الاعلام خصوصا والحكومة عموما القيام بكل هذه الانتهاكات رضوخا لابتزاز المتطرفين، خصوصا ان الاستجواب هو احد ثمار هذا الرضوخ المتمادي لاعداء الحرية والفرح

Happy New Year? Not So Fast!!

اوردت احدى الصحف خبراً مفاده ان رجال الامن والمباحث في وزارة الداخلية يشحذون هممهم لمواجهة احتفالات رأس السنة الجديدة، وسط تشديد غير عادي تجاه الفنادق والمطاعم تحسباً لأي مخالفات في هذه الليلة، وقال مصدر أمني ان قوة الامن جاهزة للتوجه الى أي مكان، وحتى المخيمات والبيوت والشقق والجواخير اذا وردت شكاوى بوجود مخالفات.. انتهى الخبر.

وانا وان كنت على الصعيد الشخصي غير متحمس للاحتفال برأس السنة لاني اعتبر كل يوم يمر هو رأس سنة جديدة على اليوم المثيل له في السنة التي انقضت، ولكن هذه مسألة شخصية قد لا تهم احداً، وما يهم هنا هو حريات الناس واختياراتهم، التي تنوي وزارة الداخلية العتيدة مصادرتها، وعلى مرأى ومسمع الجميع من دون ان يحرك احد ساكناً من اعضاء الحكومة او المجلس! ولذا نجد لزاما علينا، نحن المدافعين عن حريات المواطن والمقيم، التصدي لذلك الافتئات على تلك الحريات اليتيمة، الذي تزداد وتيرته كلما رفع اصحاب الآراء المتشددة المتزمتة عقيرتهم بالصراخ، نجد ان الاجهزة الحكومية تبادر بالخضوع والخنوع لإرضائهم، مع ان هذه المسألة، اي مسألة ارضائهم، هي مطلب صعب المنال، فهم كلما اعطوا امرا طلبوا آخر

من المعروف ان الاجهزة الامنية والمباحث لها مهام اخرى اهم من قمع المحتفلين برأس السنة، هناك المخدرات المتفشية بين الشباب، هناك الفساد والرشاوى التي تدفع بمركزنا فيها إلى مواقع متقدمة، هناك الجرائم المرورية التي تحدث امام اعينهم، هناك آلاف المطلوبين على ذمة قضايا يسرحون ويمرحون ويرتكبون الجريمة تلو الاخرى بدون رادع، هناك العناصر الامنية من الشرطة والجيش المنسوب إليها ارتكاب جرائم بشكل متزايد متصاعد

هناك عشرات المهام المتصلة بأمن الوطن والمواطن تركها رجال الامن ليتم تفريغهم وتكريس عملهم للتصدي لطلاب الفرح والاحتفال برأس السنة! وهو تقليد عالمي يحتفل به في كل انحاء العالم بما فيها الكويت وبحدود الآداب والقانون.. كثير من اهل الكويت والمقيمين فيها دفعهم ذلك الاتجاه بتحويل رجال الامن والمباحث الى ?قوة للأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر? لقضاء ليلة رأس السنة في الخارج ليصرفوا ملايين الدنانير هناك حارمين الاقتصاد المحلي منها. ولن يبقى في البلد الا ?المعترين? على حد تعبير اخواننا اللبنانيين، وهؤلاء هم من يشحذ رجال الامن هممهم لمكافحتهم والتصدي لهم

ولا حول ولا قوة الا بالله العلي العظيم

A Kuwaiti Christmas?

Walking around the malls and shops of Kuwait, you can't help but notice the Christmas trees and decorations everywhere. A trip to the مشاتل on the 4th Ring Road will even get you a variety of real trees in all shapes and sizes. Of course these are businesses that are owned by business-minded people, as opposed to the Co-Ops where any sign of Christmas can be a ticket to hell.

The cold weather and the ugly fake trees with flashing red and green lights at every intersection seem to be adding to an unintentional Christmas spirit. Will this be the the wake-up call for Islamists to object to these crimes against taste?

I remember last year some idiots distributed an infammatory flyer warning Muslims not wish fellow Christians a Merry Christmas because to do so would be to accept the divinity of Jesus Christ, and that Christians are all infidels and going to hell anyway.

If an ill-informed friend or family member - or indeed some deranged bearded stranger - tells you not to wish Merry Christmas to anyone, you may remind them politely that Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus (a legit prophet last time I checked), and is similar to our celebrations of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, minus the trees, angst and commercialism. You may also gently remind them how our fellow Christians go out of their way to wish us a Ramadan/Eid Mubarak every year.

A little reciprocal civility never hurt anyone.

وزير الإعلام السابق - وزير الطاقة الحالي - تارك الوزارة اسبوعين ورايح يجابل دورة الخليج في قطر، ولا أعتقد أنه سيرجع الكويت اليوم بعد هزيمة البارحة بل سيبقى هناك لحضور حفل الختام

Driving home from work, iPod on random, Fleetwood Mac's Go Your Own Way comes on... This has to be one of the most powerful break-up songs ever recorded, especially when you know that the band members were in the middle of their own affairs and break-ups when it was written.

The driving beat, the guitars, the chorus... Do not listen to this song on a highway. I found myself speeding way past the speed limit, rocking along and singing to myself... In my work clothes... God knows how I must've looked to the drivers I zoomed past!

Dubai Film Festival

No I'm not blogging from Dubai this weekend, but this report in the New York Times about the Dubai Film Festival caught my eye.. and here it is. Once you finish reading it, close your eyes and imagine something like this happening here...

In Dubai, a Festival Is Born. Next, an Industry?

Tinseltown it's not. But Dubai, a swiftly rising city of cranes and skyscrapers on the Persian Gulf, has highly ambitious plans for the silver screen. And frustrated Arab filmmakers are hoping that this is their moment, too.

The weeklong $10 million Dubai International Film Festival, which ended on Saturday, was billed as a showcase of Arab and international films. Coinciding with the comparatively lower-budget Marrakesh and Cairo film festivals, the Dubai version, with 13,000 people attending, was even talked up as a spur to starting a film industry here.

About 75 films were shown, together meant to appeal to Dubai's diverse community of Asians, Arabs and Westerners. But more than anything, the festival was all Dubai: a mix of Disneyland and Las Vegas. Like most things in this desert emirate, the 50-yard-long red carpet leading into the main festival hall was brand new. Even the location, a resort complex built to resemble an old-fashioned mud-brick city, seemed appropriate - more movie lot than luxury hotel. The program - indie, Hollywood and Bollywood films - was meant to please. And big American movies, like "The Grudge," "Polar Express" and "Ocean's Twelve," proved the biggest draws.
About the only unhappy people were Arab filmmakers, who fancied themselves as the stars of the program. For much of the week, nearly 50 of them wrestled with their fundamental problem: lack of support. In screenings, talks and frequent informal sessions, Arab auteurs flown in by the festival made no secret of their frustration with their moneyed hosts and with the perceived apathy of potential Arab backers.

"I'm sick of co-productions and going for money from Europe and the U.S.," said Annemarie Jacir, a Palestinian-American whose short film, "Like Twenty Impossibles," about Palestinians navigating Israeli checkpoints, played to packed audiences. Despite all the talk of building bridges with the West, Ms. Jacir noted, it would be better to build them closer to home. "What there really needs to be is a bridge between the gulf and Arab filmmakers," she said, speaking about the wealthy Persian Gulf region.

Abdul Hamid Juma, chief executive of Dubai Media City, a government-sponsored media free-trade zone that sponsored the festival, said he hoped to have an answer for the directors soon. Media City - similar to an office park but for publishing, broadcasting and entertainment companies - intends to create a Dubai Film Commission to support producers, a Dubai Location Management Commission to encourage film production, and an infrastructure and a Dubai Film Fund to finance movie projects.

"Only Dubai can do this at such a critical time," Mr. Juma said. Blame the dearth of financial support on politics, said Mohamed Maklouf, who organized the festival's Arab shorts program. With authoritarian governments running much of the Arab world, few are likely to back independent cinema, Mr. Maklouf said, because, "Our leaders are terrified of the moving image."

But many other problems dog Arab filmmakers, including distribution of their product in the region. Movie distribution is often handled by the equivalent of cartels in Arab countries, and unless filmmakers are connected to them, they can be denied distribution and thus a take at the box office. The subject matter of many independent films does not sell either. Many Arab films, says Taher Houchi, a Moroccan-Berber filmmaker, live on the festival circuit but cannot make it on their own.

The largest producer of Arabic-language films is Egypt, which releases between 30 and 40 feature films a year, said an Arab film critic, Essam Zakarea. Known mainly for their adherence to formula and to slapstick, Egyptian films are made by a handful of small and midsize producers, and have budgets of well under $1 million each. They do, however, make it onto DVD and video CD (an inexpensive format on CD-ROM used throughout Asia and the Middle East) from Djibouti to Iraq.

Filmmakers in countries with nascent film industries like Tunisia and Morocco can receive money from their governments, but they are comparatively small sums. Tunisia has a fund of about $500,000, which it uses to help finance three or four films a year, said Nawfel Saheb-Ettaba, a Tunisian film director who produced a feature-length movie with almost two-thirds of the money coming from the government.

The vast majority of Arabic-language films, especially those that reach the West, are made with European or private money. And that, many filmmakers say, has its own price. "The reason this film exists is because of French cinema," said Kamel Cherif, a Tunisian-born filmmaker, about his short coming-of-age movie "Sign of Belonging." The film, which examines both East and West through the eyes of a Tunisian boy who faces circumcision, was made largely with French government money. The 30-minute movie cost $200,000 and won the award for best short film at the Venice International Film Festival earlier this year. But, Mr. Cherif said, he paid a price for that support. A co-producer was added to work with him, and he had to do most of the post-production work in France at a significantly higher cost, which ate into his budget.

"It becomes a real problem because the Europeans are beginning to put controls" on films in exchange for financial support, Mr. Cherif said, adding, "I would hope that one day a film like this would be funded by an Arab." An Arab would have understood the subject matter better, Mr. Cherif said, and helped him to produce a more authentic product.

Can Dubai come to the rescue? Mr. Juma said it could, with a bit of time. "I don't want people to come here and shoot the desert or terrorist movies," Mr. Juma said. "I want to create an industry."

Arab Reform on Hold

Here's the New York Times' Thomas Friedman reporting from Dubai. Since registration is required to read it on the NY Times website, I've taken the liberty of posting it here for your reading (dis)pleasure:

For years now it's been clear that the Middle East peace process has left the realm of diplomacy and started to become an industry, with its own G.N.P. of conferences and seminars. But there is a new industry rapidly overtaking it in the Middle East, and that is the "reform industry." Every month there seems to be a new conference on reform in the Arab world. Indeed, I have been attending one here in Dubai, an amazing city-state on the Persian Gulf that is becoming the Singapore of the Arab East.

What the reform process and the peace process have in common is that neither advances when we Americans tell the parties in English that they have to change. Progress happens only when the people here tell themselves in Arabic that they must change. So I took heart from the blunt manner in which Dubai's crown prince, Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, opened his conference by saying, in a speech broadcast by Arab satellite TV, "I say to my fellow Arabs [in power]: If you do not change, you will be changed."

I didn't hear talk like that five years ago. Nor did I hear an Egyptian friend remarking to me that she had absolutely no problem with Hosni Mubarak's son, Gamal, one day succeeding his father. Gamal is a good man. She just had one condition, that Gamal Mubarak succeed his father the same way George W. Bush succeeded his father: in a free election.

Meanwhile, last Sunday, about 1,000 Egyptians gathered in downtown Cairo, many wearing over their mouths yellow stickers with the Arabic word for "enough" written on them, to protest plans by President Mubarak to run for a fifth term.

Yes, there is definitely something stirring out here, but it has miles to go before meaningful changes occur. It is something America should be quietly encouraging, so it is inexplicable to me that the Bush administration is holding up publication of the next U.N. Arab Human Development Report. Let me fill you in:

In 2002, the U.N. Development Program sponsored a group of courageous Arab economists, social scientists and other scholars to do four reports on human development in the Arab world. The first one, in 2002, caused a real stir in this region - showing, among other things, that the Arabs were falling so far behind that Spain's G.D.P. was greater than that of the entire Arab League combined.

That first report, published in Arabic and English, was downloaded off the Internet one million times. It was a truly incisive diagnosis of the deficits of freedom, education and women's empowerment retarding the Arab world. In 2003, the same group produced a second Arab Human Development Report, about the Arab knowledge deficit - even tackling the supersensitive issue of how Islam and its current spiritual leaders may be holding back modern education. This was stuff no U.S. diplomat could ever raise, but the Arab authors of these reports could and did.

So I eagerly awaited the third Arab Human Development Report, due in October. It was going to be pure TNT, because it was going to tackle the issue of governance and misgovernance in the Arab world, and the legal, institutional and religious impediments to political reform. These are the guts of the issue out here. I waited. And I waited. But nothing.

Then I started to hear disturbing things - that the Bush team saw a draft of the Arab governance report and objected to the prologue, because it was brutally critical of the U.S. invasion of Iraq and the Israeli occupation. This prologue constitutes some 10 percent of the report. While heartfelt, it's there to give political cover to the Arab authors for their clear-eyed critique of Arab governance, which is the other 90 percent of the report.

But the Bush team is apparently insisting that language critical of America and Israel be changed - as if language 10 times worse can't be heard on Arab satellite TV every day. And until it's changed, the Bush folks are apparently ready to see the report delayed or killed altogether. And they have an ally. The government of Egypt, which is criticized in the report, also doesn't want it out - along with some other Arab regimes.

So there you have it: a group of serious Arab intellectuals - who are neither sellouts nor bomb throwers - has produced a powerful analysis, in Arabic, of the lagging state of governance in the Arab world. It is just the sort of independent report that could fuel the emerging debate on Arab reform.

But Bush officials, along with Arab autocrats, are holding it up until it is modified to their liking - even if that means it won't appear at all.

It makes you weep.

Since it started raining yesterday, I've been driving around to this strange yet beautiful album "Lost Horizons" by Lemon Jelly. It's a trippy electronic instrumental collection that's oh-so-English and thus reminds me of driving on the M4 in the rain out of London for some reason.

For once, I actually enjoyed driving in the rain around Kuwait!

المجتمع الكويتي يعيش اغلب افراده حياة كريمة تكفي احتياجاتهم اليومية، ومع ذلك يلجأ البعض الى ارتكاب مثل هذه الجريمة ـ المقصود الرشوة ـ والواقع ان هذا السلوك الانحرافي قد طرأ على الكويت في الآونة الاخيرة وترجع اسباب ذلك لما يلي: افتقاد المرتشين لاسس التربية السليمة، فنجدهم يفتقدون المثل وتعاليم الدين الحنيف والأخلاقيات والانتماء الى المجتمع، وكل هذا بلا ادنى شك يؤدي الى نشوء شخصيات غير سوية

هذه هي احدى فقرات تقرير جهاز خدمة المواطن الشهير عن الفساد والرشوة في الادارات الحكومية. والواضح هنا ان واضعي التقرير يستغربون انتشار ظاهرة الرشوة في مجتمع مثل الكويت يتمتع افراده بدخل مضمون وكاف. لكن مع هذا يردُ التقرير استفحال الرشوة في الآونة الاخيرة ـ لاحظ الآونة الاخيرة ـ الى افتقاد المرتشين لاسس التربية وتعاليم الدين الحنيف

سؤالنا لوزارة التربية اللي طايحة فينا تربية دينية ايش قاعدين تسوون حضراتكم طول هاالمدة؟ ما الذي تنجزه مناهجكم وما العائد اجتماعيا من هذا التكثيف للحقن الديني؟ وزارة الاعلام بضوابطها الثلاثة عشر وفقراتها الدينية التي غطت على البرامج العادية.. وين نتيجة قصقصتكم ومراقبتكم ووين نتيجة خطبائكم ووعاظكم اللي فرضتوهم علينا؟ ما يسمى اعضاء مجلس الامة اللي حديثهم في الأخلاق يتعدى عشرات المرات حديثهم واهتمامهم بالسياسة.. ما هي نتيجة انتخابكم وطلعاتكم وصرعاتكم الدينية؟ الفساد والرشوة زادا في الاونة الاخيرة. يعني كل ما زاد تدين الناس زادت بلاوينا. هذي ليست من عندي ولكنها من أحد أبرز تقارير الحكومة.. إذن الى متى سيظل البعض يطنطن حول زيادة الجرعات الدينية والأخلاقية إذا كان واضحا أنها لا تؤدي إلا إلى نقيضها او ان صلاحيتها انتهت منذ زمن؟

احنا قلناها من زمان يوم كان في انفتاح وحرية، كنا بخير ونعمة، وهدوء وسكينة.. لكن يوم حلت علينا الصحوة حلت علينا النقمة، ابتلينا بكساد ومناخ وغزو ومخدرات بعد.. واليوم رشوة وفساد.. والله يستر من الجاي

Reform Starts at Home

كتب أحمد الديين مقالاً رائعاً في عدد اليوم من جريدة الرأي العام معلقاً على تحذير ولي العهد - أو الحاكم الفعلي - لإمارة دبي الشيخ محمد بن راشد للحكام العرب بأن يصلحوا أحوال بلادهم قبل فوات الأوان، وأعجبني سرده لتاريخ زوال الدكتاتوريات حول العالم في العقود الماضية مقارنة مع بقاء الدول العربية على طمام المرحوم. اليكم المقال - لأني أدري فيكم كسالى

النصيحة، التي وجهها ولي عهد دبي الشيخ محمد بن راشد، إلى أشقائه من الحكام العرب بأنّ يتغيروا وإلاّ فإنّهم سيُغيّرون، تمثل تحذيراً واجباً ومستحقاً. فمعظم نظم الحكم العربية يفتقد مشروعيته الدستورية، وليس لديه سوى مشروع وحيد هو مشروع الحكم والانفراد بالسلطة، ومعظمها يفترض أنّ نجاحه الوقتي في تهميش القوى الحيّة في مجتمعاتنا العربية انتصار أبدي وقدر محتوم، ويتعامل باستخفاف مع استحقاقات الإصلاح ودعوات التغيير، التي لا بأس عند الحاجة من الادعاء اللفظي الفارغ من أي مضمون بوجود النيّة على تلبيتها مع عقد العزم على تجاهلها

صحيح أنّ موازين القوى لا تزال حتى الآن مختلة لغير صالح الشعوب العربية، وصحيح أنّه قد لا يرتجى خير من "مشروعات الإصلاح والمقرطة" الأميركية الموعودة، ولكنّ إلى متى ستبقى بلداننا العربية خارج التاريخ، وخارج منطق العصر؟

في السبعينيات انهارت الديكتاتوريات العسكرية في اليونان، والبرتغال، وإسبانيا... وفي الثمانينيات زالت الديكتاتوريات الحاكمة في أميركا اللاتينية... وفي التسعينيات سقطت النظم الشمولية في شرقي اوروبا...وخلال تلك العقود الثلاثة شملت موجة المقرطة دول أفريقيا وشرقي آسيا... فيما لم تحدث تغييرات جديّة تُذكر في عالمنا العربي، الذي يشكل الاستثناء الأوحد في عالم اليوم... ولكن إلى متى؟

إنّ نظم الحكم في بلداننا العربية كافة مطالبة الآن أكثر من أي وقت مضى بأن تدرك حقيقة أنّها ما لم ستمد شرعيتها من شعوبها ومن مجتمعاتها ومن دساتيرها الديموقراطية، فإنّها زائلة، طال الزمان أم قصر، وهي مطالبة، قبل فوات الأوان، بأن تحقق قدراً مناسباً من التوافق بين ?مشروع الحكم? ومشروع بناء الدولة الحديثة والإصلاح والتنمية. وعليها أن تتصالح مع شعوبها، وتستجيب إلى متطلبات الإصلاح، قبل أن تُفرض عليها تنازلات من الخارج

هذه النصيحة التحذيرية يفترض أن تمتد أيضاً إلى ذلك البعض القليل من نظمنا العربية الحاكمة، ممن تتوافر لديه حدود دنيا من الشرعية التاريخية أو الدستورية، إذ على هذا البعض القليل أن يدرك جيداً أنّه هو الآخر، مطالب بتحقيق إصلاحات سياسية واقتصادية واجتماعية، وبالتخلي عن نهج الانفراد بالسلطة، وبمواكبة منطق العصر... فما هو قائم الآن من حدود دنيا مقبولة أقل بكثير مما يفترض أن يتحقق، وما هو مسكوت عنه اليوم في ظل موازين القوى المختلة سيُثار علناً في الغد القريب، وما هو مؤجل سيصبح مستحقاً

أخيراً، يبقى السؤال مشروعاً: ترى، هل سيبدأ الناصح المحذر بنفسه؟ هذا ما يؤمّل منه

ولعل خير ما قدموه لنا وللغة العربية مؤخراً هو مصطلح"المدونة" ولا أعرف إن كانت هذه الكلمة تنطق مع كسر الواو أو فتحها. لقد وجدتها - متأخراً كعادتي - أفضل بكثير من كلمة "بلوج" أو "بلوغ" وقد كنت كتبت في السابق عن انتشار مصطلح البلوَغة (مع فتح الواو) لدى الأشقاء في مصر، لكن هذه كلمة عربية تصف بدقة ما نقوم به هذه الأيام من كتابات على الانترنت، أخذت نصف وقتنا وكادت تسيطر علينا

I Don't Want My KTV!!

بحث شيق في عدد اليوم من جريدة القبس يؤكد بلا شك ما كنا ندركه جميعاً منذ زمن طويل، وهو أن غالبية سكان الكويت لا يتابعون برامج القنوات الكويتية ولا حتى نشرات الأخبار الا في آخرها لمتابعة نشرة الوفيات، بعيد عنكم

تلفزيون الكويت امتاز - بجدارة متناهية - في تقديم كل ما هو ممل وسقيم وخصص ساعات لا حصر لها لبرامج الحكم والمواعظ التي تقدمها الوجوه المكفهرة، ونشرات الأخبار المطولة على غير معنى حتى "طفّش" المشاهدين ليفروا بلا عودة إلى ما لذ وطاب من القنوات الأخرى، ولا أقصد هنا بالضرورة قنوات روبي و بوسي منير وغيرهما من ش----ط الفن الهابط بل القنوات ذات البرامج الشيقة التي تخاطب العقل والعاطفة معاً سواء العربية منها أو الأجنبية. حتى عندما أراد تلفزيون الكويت مواكبة الركب وتقليد البرامج الترفيهية التي اكتسبت شعبية عالية على الفضائيات الأخرى، نجده يستعين بمقدمين يجمعهم ثقل دم لا يفسّر سوى أنه غضب من رب العالمين، وبمبالغة وانعدام الذوق في الملابس والماكياج، هذا غير الإضاءة التعيسة التي تظهر المقدمين والضيوف كأنهم مرضى، والديكور المخزي الذي صممه أشخاص مصابون بعمى الألوان ولا يعرفون الفرق بين الستوديو وغرفة الجلوس

سمعت منذ فترة قصيرة أحد الإعلاميين المتميزين يشكي الحال من إدارة وزارة التضليل التي لا زالت تعتقد رغم كل الأدلة والبحوث أن الكويتيين لا يشاهدون إلا محطات تلفزيون الكويت، ولا زالت تدار الأمور حسب نظام الدورات الموسمية وكأن ما يحلو مشاهدته في الشتاء يختلف عن نحب متابعته في الصيف. إن أكبر مشاكل تلفزيون الكويت والمتسبب في تخلفه وفقدان المشاهدين هو تدخل الحكومة وجهات التنفذ السياسي في شؤونه ليدار حسب أهواء ومصالح هذه الفئات التي لا تأبه إلى ما يريده المشاهدون ولا يلتفتون إلى المنافسة التي كادت تقضي على محطاته البائسة. حتى عندما يحاول تلفزيون الكويت أن يبذل جهداً في تقديم برنامج مميز يجد أن أن الميزانيات المخصصة له - بعد المعايَر والطرارة - لا تليق به وينتهي الحال على ما نراه الآن من برامج نص كم لا يشاهدها أحد

ولا ننسى التهديدات والاستجوابات التي تعرقل عمل الوزارة وتمنع أي جهد مخلص لتعارضه مع مخططات المستجوبين، وتجعل من الوزارة مستنقعاً للطائفية والقبلية والمحسوبية، كما أشار الكاتب ناجي سعود الزيد اليوم أيضاً

السالفة خاربة يا جماعة، فما هو الحل الأمثل في نظركم؟

أحرز منتخبنا الوطني "الأزرق" هدفين مقابل هدف واحد للمنتخب السعودي الشقيق في الجولة الاولى من منافسات المجموعة الاولى لدورة كأس الخليج في الدوحة، ولا يخفى على أحد فرحة الشعب الكويتي بهذا الإنجاز حتى ولو كان في بداية الدورة... لأننا تعودنا في السنين الأخيرة على الإحباط والفشلة بمتابعة منتخبنا وهو يجر وراءه أذيال الخيبة في دورات ومباريات عديدة

لكن لابد من وقفة وسؤال.... هل اقتصرت فرحتنا على هزيمة المنتخب السعودي فقط؟ هل كنا سنرى كل هذه المسيرات في الشوارع لو كان الفوز على منتخب آخر وفي بداية الدورة؟ أعرف الكثير من الناس الذين لا يتابعون كرة القدم ولا يهتمون بها إلا إذا كان منتخبنا يواجه المنتخب السعودي، دون غيره. ما سر هذا الحماس ضد الجيران الذي وصل إلى حد اطلاق الشائعات بخصوص اتفاق بين الفريقين على التعادل في نتائج المباراة حفاظاً على "العلاقات الثنائية" بين الكويت والسعودية؟

المهم... انشاءالله تكون نتيجة مباراة الأمس حافزاً لمنتخبنا لمزيد من الإنجازات وعودة إلى أيام عز الكرة الكويتية

Band Aid Dilemma

I gave a half-assed recommendation to the new Band Aid version of "Do They Know It's Christmas?" on the last playlist. And it's been bothering me ever since... It just sounds insincere and a bit pompous.. and yet it's for a good cause so I can't give it a good trashing.

But it seems I'm not alone in this crisis of conscience. This hysterical website sums it up:

You want this record to succeed, because you feel for the plight of the refugees in the Darfur region of Sudan and this project is funding aid projects on their behalf. However, you hate this recording and feel your musical ego looming and refusing to be bruised.

The answer?

Blogger Weirdness

Very weird things happening on this blog, and it's apparently only with my PC's both at home and at work, plus my laptop. The few recent posts with Arabic titles show a blank white page when I click to see the comments. And yet, other bloggers don't seem to be facing the problem and have left comments. Are they using Macs?

Anyway.. I experimented with the post titles and changed them back to English. And now they work here.

Go figure...

Choice Words

واجهت الكثير من النقد لدى استخدامي بعض الألفاظ لوصف فئات معينة في المجتمع الكويتي من الفاسدين والمتهربين من التزاماتهم تجاه الدولة، ربما لافتقاري الخبرة الصحفية والحنكة في انتقاء المفردات في ما أكتبه من تعليقات على أحداث الساعة

ولكن ها هم كتابنا المخضرمين يتبعون نفس النهج... فمثلاً إذا كنت قد وصفت المتخلفين عن سداد فواتير الكهرباء " بالخونة"، فإن بو راكان يصفهم بالحرامية والقراصنة. ويكمل بو علي المشوار ليصف لنا "حزاية" قفص الطيور الذي كلف تسعين ألف دينار وإعلانات النفاق المدفوعة من قبل المطبلين لمن وصفته أنا بطايح الحظ... وهنا لابد من وقفة اعتذار فهو ليس طايح حظ أبداً بل حظه يكسر الصخر، وأتمنى أن يكون لي مثله زمرة منافقين يمشون وراي ويطبلون ويزمرون ويدافعون عنّي

لذا قررت أن أشكل حاشية من 5 أشخاص ترافقني أينما ذهبت. و يرجى لكل من يريد الانضمام الى حاشيتي أن يقدم طلب توظيف عن طريق نائب منطقته(مع المقسوم طبعاً)، ويشترط توافر المواصفات التالية

The Business Of Blogging

Well it was only a matter of time before the business community turned its eye onto blogging as a source of revenue and as a viable advertising medium.

"Just a year ago, blogs were viewed as a collection of off-the-cuff ramblings in cyberspace read mainly by online devotees..... Now advertisers are realizing there is a market emerging in the 'blogosphere'."

I recently signed up for Google's ad sense program with the aim of putting up some ads on the blog and maybe earn a few bucks. But then I changed my mind because it would just add more clutter... God knows that Blogroll needs some serious editing!

لا يفوت يوم الا وتخرج لنا مجموعة "فلاليح" تطبل وتزمر وتدافع عن طايح الحظ رئيس هيئة الزراعة الشيخ فهد سالم العلي، باعلانات مدفوعة لا ندري من يتحمل تكاليفها

تجاوزات هذه الهيئة البائسة أكثر من أن تدرج هنا لكنني شخصياً أرى أن جريمتها الكبرى هي السماح لبعض المتنفذين عديمي الذوق بغرس الأشجار "الفالصو" القبيحة في جميع أرجاء الكويت تشب وتطفي كأنها أشجار على مدخل كازينو في لاس فيغاس. لا أعرف شخصاً واحداً نالت اعجابه هذه الأشجار، الكل يتحلطم عليها لكن لا أرى أحد يبادر بإزالتها... الطامة الكبرى كانت حين وضعت أشجار النخيل البلاستيكية ذات اللون الأصفر والأزرق على دوار دسمان.. (يعني مقابل قصر الشيخ يا حمير!!) وتم استبدالها لاحقاً بأشجار بلاستيكية أيضاً لكن بألوان السعف الطبيعية! ما هذه الجرأة الوقحة؟؟ وكيف تسمح هيئة معنية بشؤون "الزراعة" بتركيب أشجار صناعية؟

واستغرب أيضاً عدم اعتراض التيار الاسلامي عليها لتشابهها مع أشجار الكريسماس "المسيحية الكافرة"، لكن ها هو عيد الميلاد المجيد على الأبواب وقد ينتبه نائب كيفان فجأة لهذا التشابه ويعمل منه قضية نضالية كعادته.. وبما أن الغاية تبرر الوسيلة سوف نضطر للوقوف معه مجبرين إلى أن يتم إزالة هذه الأشجار القبيحة... الا إذا كانت له حسابات لا نعلم عنها مع هيئة الزراعة تدفعه للسكوت عنها.... وكل شي وارد هالأيام

Playlist December 4 - 10

A live act and a girl band in this week's playlist...

1. Wust El Balad وسط البلد: I had the privilege of catching this funky Egyptian band in a live performance over the weekend. Imagine original Arabic material performed in a style that's a hybrid of Egyptian folk, Santana, Gypsy Kings, Barenaked Ladies... you name it! I was shocked to learn they don't have a recording contract while no-talent jerks and bimbos pollute the airwaves with their squawking! You can hear them on their website in the meantime.
2. What will the neighbors say? - Girls Aloud: Yes, folks.. Zaydoun the music snob has fallen - and fallen hard! - for a totally manufactured girl group from England. I read the great reviews in the British press and dismissed them as the usual over-excited ravings of rock critics. But thanks to iTunes, which allowed me to preview the album... I'm now hooked!
3. I Don't Care - The Roots: My search for this year's best rap/hip-hop song is over!
4. Fairuz: Random classics from the eternal legend, inspired by the raging debate on new blog احتجاج. I just put the iPod on random and let it go... رجعت الشتوية just came on. Very appropriate for this weather!
5. Band Aid 20 - Do They Know it's Christmas?: 20 years after the cheesy original (which I loved!), this time it's more of a guitar&piano affair, with the mandatory rap break in the middle. It sounds good, and it's for a good cause.. but it drags on a bit and it all goes horribly wrong at the end with a really bad guitar solo that's totally unnecessary.

New Job

I started my new job today, and they didn't have the PC set up in my office yet. So I passed the time reading and getting to know my new colleagues... It's amazing how much there is to do when you manage to tear yourself away from the darned PC!

And speaking of maintaining anonymity... WHERE THE HELL IS MADM2000? I've been quiet on the subject for weeks, thinking he maybe traveling or مستعسر مع رمضان but now I am truly concerned. We usually chat on MSN Messenger but I haven't seen him since his last post on his blog. I even sent him an email and checked both his MSN and Yahoo Groups sites... Nothing.

However, at some point during Ramadan... he popped up on my MSN Messenger for a couple of minutes. I sent him a message asking him where the hell he had been, and he didn't reply. BUT... suddenly his online MSN ID changed to "From Prison". I told him that was not very funny, and a sick joke. No reply...

That was the last time I saw him, and his ID on my MSN list is still "From Prison"

I have to get this off my chest...

I am really truly jealous and green with envy of all the Kuwaiti bloggers who have managed to keep their identities completely anonymous. I think my cover is blown.. not that I really care, but still...

There! I said it!

Honey Honey!

What the hell is going on with all these announcements from various local honey manufacturers claiming they have the endorsement and approval of the Ministry of Health? In today's Al-Watan on the front page, there's a news item about the ministry issuing a public warning to watch out for false claims by these honey manufacturers, and warns that their honey could even cause liver damage and kidney failure!!

But right under the article is a paid advertisment by the notorious عسل العويد who shot to fame during Ramadan with all kinds of bizarre and false health claims.

It's amazing what people can get away with here. Have we truly become such a law-less country?!

Meanwhile... Kuwait is considered an important honey producer. Who knew?!

اسقاط الفواتير

لا أدري، بل لا أفهم، لماذا يستمر موضوع اسقاط فواتير الكهرباء عن بعض المواطنين الخونة - نعم الخونة - عرضة للنقاش والجدل والمساومات. فإلى جانب كون هذا الموضوع خاضع لمزايدات نواب الفساد لكسب أصوات ناخبيهم الفاسدين مثلهم، لا أفهم لماذا لا تقطع وزارة الطاقة الخدمة عن المتخلفين عن السداد وتريحنا من حنّتهم وحنّة نوابهم؟

I read this very entertaining article which takes a philosophical approach to modern manners, and I felt I have to share some of its advice regarding everything from mobile phone etiquette to travel rules to public displays of affection:

• Never text anybody while in the middle of a conversation.
• You should not accept or continue a phone call if a shop assistant is serving you.
• You should always monitor your volume when chatting on your mobile.
• Stop for pedestrians at pedestrian crossings.
• Do not smooch in the company of others.
• Always dump in person, not by text, fax or email.
• If you go through a door first you should always hold it open for those who follow.
• Offer your seat to the elderly, but don't assume they'll want it.
• If invited to someone's house for dinner, don't be one of the "ungrateful fed".
• Never tell somebody else's child off in front of them, or criticise adults for their poor parenting. Except when you should.
• Wipe down gym equipment after use.
• Remember that neither the cinema nor the theatre is your front room.

The Da Vinci Code

I know I'm waaaaay behind, embarrasingly so even... but I FINALLY got around to reading The Da Vinci Code while I was away, having seen every other person read it in various versions and languages on the beach on my last break... and the one before that, to the point where I felt a bit left out. What was this novel that had everyone so gripped? I had to get my hands on it ASAP. I finished it last week it and now I'm OBSESSED!!

I want to visit all the locations in the novel. Some I've seen before as a teenager, but I need to see again them with different eyes.. knowing what I know now.

Even though the allegations in the book have since been refuted as just fiction, I was still gripped by the alleged extreme measures taken by the Church to suppress the true of origins of Christianity, and how it allegedly conspired to increase its grip on power and keep Christians subjugated to its authority by keeping these secrets for centuries. It got me thinking about the possibility of parallels with today's version of Islam, which I always suspected has been distorted from its true origins beyond recognition even though I have no real knowledge about this. It's just a nagging feeling..

Another thing... how come the Vatican didn't issue a "fatwa" calling for Dan Brown's death?

ثم ما هي تكاليف مثل هذه القناة؟ وما الذي يضمن أن الشباب والناشئة سيقبلون على مشاهدتها دون غيرها من مئات المحطات الفضائية المتوفرة؟ وهل سيفضل شبابنا متابعة برامجها على الهياتة في الشوارع؟

لاداعي يا جماعة لهذه القناة الجديدة لأنكم اختطفتوا تلفزيون الكويت وطوعتوه لخدمة أهدافكم غير النبيلة منذ زمن طويل، فما عليكم سوى زيادة جرعة البرامج الدينية قليلاً وتتحقق أمنيتكم بقناة تربوية اسلامية على كيف كيفكم وبدون دوخة راس

لا أعرف سبباً مقنعاً لهذه الضجة التي تثار ضد إصدار بيان من القوى السياسية في داخل مجلس الأمة أو خارجها فيما يخص ما تتعرض له الفلوجة من قبل القوات الأميركية، وللأسف الشديد فان المعارضة من القوى الليبرالية التي تعتبر احدى أهم قواعدها السياسية تقبل الرأي الآخر وعدم الانفراد بالرأي الواحد! وكأنه كفر سياسي الا تنتقد الولايات المتحدة الاميركية تجاه أي عمل تقوم به، ومن المفارقات التي يتجاهلها أعداء الرأي الآخر، ان القوى السياسية الأميركية ذاتها تنتقد بشراسة ما يحصل حالياً في الفلوجة والطرق الوحشية التي تمارس هناك، بينما في الكويت محرم تماماً إبداء أدنى احتجاج على السياسة الأميركية

مشكلتنا في الكويت ان البعض أميركي أكثر من الأميركان أنفسهم! وهو أمر خطير للغاية سبق لي شرحه في مقالي السابق الفلوجة تحترق. الأمر الثاني ان طرح الرأي المخالف لا يعني بالضرورة ان الولايات المتحدة الاميركية ستتبناه في اليوم التالي، فأميركا باقية في العراق شئنا أم أبينا! وهي تنفذ بذلك سياسة مكتوبة يعمل على تنفيذها بغض النظر عن الرأي الآخر سواء الأميركي أو الكويتي! فعلى من ينادي دائماً بسماع أكثر من رأي ألا يتضايق من وجود أصوات كويتية أخرى لا تقبل بالسياسة الأميركية

إن مسألة عدم التعرض الى سياسة الولايات المتحدة الأميركية كون ان الأخيرة نرتبط معها بمصالح مشتركة إنما هو عذر غير مقبول إطلاقاً، فأميركا قبل غيرها تأسست على فكر الاختلاف، وأوضح دليل على ذلك ما جرى في الانتخابات الرئاسية قبل أسابيع قليلة، لكن في النهاية تبادل بوش وكيري الحديث والتهاني والتأكيد على مصلحة الولايات المتحدة الأميركية، بل وتأكيد بوش على ضرورة كسب الأصوات التي صوتت لكيري وإقناعها بسياسة حزبه

يبدو اننا في الكويت بحاجة الى كم ألف سنة كي نهضم الديموقراطية والتعددية السياسية، والى ذلك الحين فإن الوضع سيبقى على ما هو عليه من ضيق صدر للرأي الآخر والكفر بوجهات النظر، والولاء المطلق للتوجه السياسي والمكابرة الى أبعد الحدود

Couldn't have said it better myself! These fools don't realize that by worrying too much about what the US might think, they are actually insulting it by assuming it doesn't accept dissenting opinions and that it's this petty and small-minded.... And that it actually cares what we think!!

Kuwaiti Couture?

This one's for all you ladies, because "you gotta lotta 'splainin' to do!"

In our new blogger NYChick's rant on my post from before the Eid, she went off the rails on several issues that annoy her in Kuwait, most of which we've talked about before... But the one that caught my attention is this latest phenomenon/fad/هبّة of some delusional young Kuwaiti women who call themselves "fashion designers", but are really just some untrained girls with spare time, a sketch pad, a few Filipina seamstresses, and unlimited access to some of the "less than tasteful" fabrics from البلوكات. The majority - if not all - of these "designers" specialize in درّاعات (i.e. nothing any sane woman would wear in public) as evidenced by their ads in the papers before Ramadan to announce their new collections just in time for all the private social gatherings and غبقات to come. And of course, the ones that hit the jackpot are the designers who manage to dress Kuwait TV's various female personalities during Ramadan, thus inflicting their eye-sore designs on an unsuspecting audience beyond our borders.

From what I understand, a small number of these young ladies are actually pretty good but just need to refine their technique a bit; a few courses in a specialized fashion academy wouldn't hurt. But the overwhelming majority of them are just plain terrible and tasteless, and are only supported by their friends and family out of obligation, and of course by their colleagues at the ministries since that's apparently where they show their "creations".

Don't get me wrong.... a local fashion industry and young Kuwaiti talent are definitely things to be encouraged, but only if done right and with proper guidance and training.

And yet.... now that we're on this subject.... how come NONE of these so-called designers make day clothes that women can wear to work, for example?

While I was away having fun on my "in-between-jobs" break ... how did you fellow bloggers spend your عيد الفطر holidays? Were your plans screwed by the confusion over the correct Eid dates? Did you do anything fun or exciting?

Visas

Two friends are getting married this weekend, and they have invited many of their friends from around the region to attend. Among the invited guests are 2 Jordanian ladies who live and work in Dubai.

They applied for their visitors visa through the hotel where they will be staying, and guess what? Their visa requests were denied, and now they will have to rely on local "wasta" and hopefully get their visas ready in time for the wedding.

Several questions arise...

1. Were they denied the visas because they are Jordanian?
2. Were they denied because they are single Jordanian females?
3. Are they are a threat to national security?
4. Why is it that we can travel anywhere we like but others have to BEG and GROVEL to get a visitor's visa to Kuwait, God's promised land?

Ramadan, Week by Week

I notice a lot of people complaining about how this year's Ramadan is "not as fun" as it used to be. While I don't really disagree, I think the secret to making the most of Ramadan lies in managing your expectations, so there aren't any nasty surprises or disappointments.

So my fellow bloggers, here's my handy Print+Save guide to making the most of every Ramadan, week by week.

Disclaimer: This is a strictly non-religious guide. If you're looking to me for spiritual guidance, then you're in deep shit!

Week 1

1. No matter how secular you think you are, you can't deny the lovely feeling of calm and spirituality that descends on the country as... hang on... &%$#@*!! [curses the fat woman in a jeep who just cut him off on the highway] .
2. If the spirituality thing doesn't rock your boat, rejoice in the delicious treats awaiting you at the table when you break your fast. And everywhere else you go for that matter. Calories be damned!
3. The buzz of Ramadan is just out of the starting gate, with all the social and family visits.
4. This is the week where your eyes glaze over, trying to decide which "musalsalat" you will follow for the rest of the month.

Week 2

1. With social obligations out of the way, now's the time for assorted "gabgas" at friends' homes, or you might consider hosting one yourself.
2. You've sorted the "wheat from the chaff" in TV series and you've settled into a comfortable pattern. I bet Tivo could make a killing here!
3. Buy candy for قرقيعان and enjoy the last remaining shreds of Kuwaiti tradition as they become history. Start bitching about how when you were a kid... blah, blah, blah.
4. Ladies, this is the week to compare notes on whose قرقيعان was the tackiest.

Week 3

1. Guilt sets in and you hit the gym in a vain attempt to burn the calories you piled on in weeks 1 and 2.
2. Social activities start to slow down. You find time to check out the public areas like Marina Mall, maybe even go shopping.
3. Get tired of hearing yourself telling people your plans for the Eid.

Week 4

1. The clocks and calendars mysteriously seem to be going backwards, as no matter how fast you think Ramadan went by... the last week ALWAYS crawls at a snail's pace.
2. You can't bear the sight of the daily "Iftar" food anymore. In fact your food intake is greatly reduced in comparison to the first week.
3. You look forward to resuming normal sleep patterns, which you know you won't do during the Eid.
4. Everyone else is tired of Ramadan, since the novelty has worn off. فرقاه عيد indeed!

كويتي في الفلوجة

لست معنياً هنا بما يجري بين وزارة الإعلام ومنتجي مسرحية "كويتي في الفلوجة"، لأنني غسلت يدي من الحركة المسرحية الكويتية - إن صح تسميتها بذلك - منذ زمن طويل وخاصة بعد مأساة "قناص خيطان" التي تغنّت بها الصحف والجماهير وكأنها عودة لأمجاد مسرح السبعينات أيام المرحوم الشيخ جابر العلي، لم أرى فيها سوى نجمين كبيرين يهبطان إلى مستوى لم أتوقعه وسببت لي صدمة واحباط فوق الوصف

لكن سؤالي للمخرج محمد الرشود -اللي أخوه صقر يتقلب بقبره! - ألم تجد إسماً لمسرحيتك أفضل من هذا؟ الفلوجة تشهد حرباً دامية منذ شهور وتشتد أكثر هذه الأيام، وحتى لو كانت الحرب مع فلول صدام وبقية الارهابيين الزرقاويين، الكثير من الأطفال والنساء الأبرياء وقعوا وسيقعون ضحايا هذا القتال... مو وقته الله يهداك، ليش ما سميتها "كويتي في البصرة" مثلاً؟ الغريب أن وزارة الإعلام اعترضت على استخدام كلمة "كويتي" وليس "الفلوجة" واقترحت تغييرها إلى "حب في الفلوجة".......يعني يكون أفضل، مالت عليهم

وطبعاً ما صدّق على الله الأخ فؤاد الهاشم وطب بالملعب ليهاجم الوزير أبوالحسن بخصوص هذه المسرحية وغيرها، واقترح جنابه على الوزير "أن يجمع كل ما كتب عنه في الصحافة ويجلس في خلوة مع نفسه ليسألها.. هل نجحت كوزير لوزارة حساسة مثل الإعلام؟ وهل أضفت شيئا لاعمال من سبقني إلى هذا الكرسي؟.. بمعنى آخر ليسأل السيد أبوالحسن نفسه.. هل أتيت بما لم يأت به.. الأوائل؟؟

أي أوائل واللي يرحم والديك؟؟ وهل الذين سبقوه إلى الكرسي تركوه له كاملاً أم لازالوا جالسين على طريف الكرسي يطلون فوق كتفه ويدودهونه ويشاغبونه في شغله؟ ثم ما هي الإضافات "المسكتة" التي تتكلم عنها؟ مسلسلات فجر السعيد مثلاً؟ إن من حقك يا أستاذ فؤاد أن تنتقد وزير الإعلام كما ترى وتشرشحه بعد لأنه خيب آمالنا، لكن رجاءً بدون الضحك على الذقون ومقارنته بمن سبقوه.... من حلاتهم

بس تصدقون؟ أخوكم زيدون إنسان منصف ويعطي كل ذي حق حقه.... فبقدر ما استشطت غضباً على الكاتب في بداية مقاله إلا أنني غشيت من الضحك وصفقت له عندما قرأت نهاية عمود اليوم... مبروك لرئيس مجلس ادارة شركة السينما الكويتية على التهاني التي وصلت اليه من أكثر من مائة سيدة حول قراره إغلاق دور العرض خلال العشر الأواخر، ونذكره ـ فقط ـ بحديث الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم بأنهن.. ناقصات عقل ودين

Beware the Flu

It's gonna get you if you're not careful. There's a virus going around town and yours truly has been sick at home since Saturday.

I went to my favorite doctor Saturday evening for her magic injection, and I noticed something strange. There were many male patients with beards and short dishdashas (i.e. religious) and they had no problem at all getting an injection on their butts by a female nurse.

Weird, huh?

Playlist November 6-12

A very mixed bag this week. In fact, if you've been following my playlists over the past few months (and I suspect most of you haven't), I dare any of you to define my musical tastes.

1. مروان خوري - كل القصايد: If you are not moved by this beautiful song, then you are an evil heartless robot and must be destroyed!
2. Alphabetical - Phoenix: A rarity in music; a very cool French band from the land where tacky Vegas-style singers pass for serious musicians (see Johnny Halliday, Dalida et al.)
3. Hush - LL Cool J: All hip-hop should be this sunny, bouncy and fun. Great for playing in the car too.
4. محمد عبدو: A selection of his classics that I copied onto the old iPod. The man is a living legend. It's amazing how the planet's most repressed nation can produce such artistry.
5. Little Girl Blue - Janis Joplin: The rock legend cut down in her prime by a heroin overdose in 1970. This is her beautiful rendition of an old Nina Simone song.

And of course, the week wouldn't be complete without a celebration of last week's US election victory for George W. Bush, Green Day's American Idiot is the song I've chosen. Again!

وفي المقابل، ها قد انبرى نائب كيفان ليشيد بهذه البادرة
القرار الذي أصدرته شركة الكويت للسينما بتوقيف عروض السينما خلال العشر الأواخر من شهر رمضان المعظم قرار جيد ويحسب لصالح هذه الشركة وللأخوة رئيس وأعضاء مجلس إدارة الشركة، وأدعوهم إلى عدم الالتفاف إلى الأصوات النشاز التي تصدرها هناك وتنتقد هذا القرار الحكيم لأن شهر رمضان شهر العبادة والقيام، ويتأكد القيام في العشر الأواخر، وكان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا دخلت العشر الأواخر، أيقظ أهله وأحيا ليله وشدّ المئزر واعتكف في المسجد ملتمسا أجر عبادة ليلة القدر التي هي في العشر الأواخر من رمضان، هذه الليلة العظيمة التي من حرم أجرها فقد حرم الخير كله، والعبادة فيها خير من ألف شهر أي من نحو 83 سنة وأربعة أشهر حيث تتنزل الملائكة إلى الأرض فتضيق بهم الأرض فسميت ليلة القدر أي الضيق، فلهذا ماذا يضرنا لو أننا أجلنا اللهو واللعب إلى ما بعد العشر الأواخر من رمضان

ما يضرنا يا شيخ وليد هو أنه اليوم ستغلق دور السينما في العشرة الأواخر، وغداً ستغلق طوال شهر رمضان وهلم جرا....إلى أن تستولي انت وربعك والمنافقين الذين يجاملونكم على ما تبقى من وسائل الترفيه المحدودة في بلدنا حتى تتحول إلى كويتستان الطالبانية

1. Eating Kunafa is now made easier and more convenient by producing them in 3 different sizes, rather than a huge tray the size of a tennis court.
2. I love the pizza-style boxes they come in, with the little syrup containers. Much better than those individually wrapped cardboard trays that leaked syrup all over the place.
3. Different varieties to suit every taste.
4. They deliver!

The next logical step is for Kanafani to set up a website, where hungry customers can place their order (type, size, quantity), enter their address and select what time they want them delivered, or alternatively what time they want to pick them up and from which branch, enter personal information (or even set up an account!) and.... voila! KUNAFA-ON-DEMAND!!

Yesterday I had the foresight to call an hour ahead and place my order to be ready at 4.30 pm. I arrived at the "Janoob Al-Surra" branch to find a madhouse of people screaming for their orders. Fortunately, mine was ready in time for me to be in and out of there in 2 minutes. I felt so sorry for the staff, they were overwhelmed.

One other thing I noticed outside, was the line of cars waiting since 4.30 pm for the McDonalds' drive-thru to open. I don't know about you, but the thought of breaking the fast with a Big Mac makes me ill. I wonder if Supersize Me will ever play here soon...

Radio Sawa

I've never been a huge fan of Radio Sawa. It's good for when you have people over and you have no music to play - no worries for me there! - but otherwise their English/Western playlist is too damn awful; way too many boy bands and teen pop and not enough rock. So I find myself humming along to the latest Arabic hit and then when the English song comes on, 9 times out 10 I have to change the channel or switch to a CD.

However, for the past couple of days since Sheikh Zayed (RIP) passed away, they have been playing the most beautiful selection of عود and تقاسيم. It's really something!

Go figure..

دروشة المجتمع الكويتي

في الوقت الذي تتسابق فيه دول المنطقة والعالم نحو النمو الاقتصادي والتنمية في عصر العولمة الاقتصادية نجد بعض مؤسسات المجتمع المدني في الكويت وفي القطاع الخاص بالتحديد تتسابق مع الحكومة ومؤسساتها في جر المجتمع نحو الانغلاق والدروشة.. فهم يسعون تدريجياً الى القضاء على المجتمع الانفتاحي في الكويت وابعاد أهالي الكويت المعتدلين في دياناتهم وعلاقتهم مع الآخرين الى تبني مفاهيم متخلفة تدعو الى عدم احترام الآخر والغاء روح التسامح والاعتدال والوسطية

في الأمس أعلنت شركة السينما الوطنية الكويتية إغلاق دور العرض السينمائية في العشر الأواخر.. الشركة ليست شركة خاصة أو ان ملاكها من المساهمين ينتمون للاخوان المسلمين أو الحركة السلفية.. الشركة حسب علمي هي شركة مساهمة كويتية عامة.. ويعني ذلك ان أسهمها مدرجة في البورصة وربما يكون مالكو الأسهم من مشايخ الدين أو غيرهم لكن لا يجوز ان تقدم ادارة الشركة على اغلاقها لفترة عشرة أيام مما قد يكبد الشركة خسائر مادية

السؤال هنا: ما الغرض أو الهدف الرئيسي من إغلاق دور السينما من قبل مجلس الإدارة؟ هل يحاول أعضاء مجلس الادارة إخبار الناس بالكويت بأنهم ملتزمون دينياً.. إذا كان هذا هو السبب اللهم زد وبارك ديانتهم الجديدة, ولكن ما علاقة ذلك بالشركة التي يديرونها.. وكيف يتم زج القضايا الدينية في مصالح المساهمين بالشركة؟.. التساؤل الثاني الذي نود طرحه هل الذهاب للسينما أو المسرح يمنع من يريد الصلاة والتعبد من صلاته؟ وإذا تم إغلاق السينما.. هل يعني ان رواد السينما من المواطنين والمقيمين سيذهبون للمساجد للصلاة بدلاً من السينما؟

لو ان هناك منافسة حقيقية في بلد مفتوح اقتصادياً بين شركات السينما فيحق للشركة ان تغلق أبوابها لأن البدائل موجودة ومفتوحة.. لكن سياسة الاحتكار التي تمارسها شركة السينما جعلتها تتخذ سياسات تعسفية غير منطقية بإغلاق السينما في وجه روادها من الأجانب والمواطنينمرة أخرى نتساءل ما الهدف الحقيقي من هذه السياسة؟ ما دام فتح السينما لا يؤثر على رواد المساجد ودور العبادة أتصور بأن هناك توجهاً من بعض الأفراد والشركات التي يملكها الاسلام السياسي الى زيادة الجرعة الدينية ودروشة المجتمع.. لمحاربة الفن والفنانين والأدباء والشعراء وكل من لديه تفكير مستنير في المجتمع الكويتي, ما نتخوف منه هو ان تكون هذه الخطوة بداية لخطوات اخرى مثل إغلاق المحال والمطاعم أوقات الصلاة وقد بدأت الجمعيات التعاونية ومحطات الوقود بالإغلاق يوم الجمعة وربما تمتد لأيام الأسبوع في أوقات الصلاة.. هل التدين وزيادة أعداد المساجد ودروشة المجتمع الكويتي أخرجت لنا مجتمعاً تقياً ومتعبداً.. أبداً العكس صحيح والدليل على ذلك ارتفاع معدلات الجريمة وتعاطي المخدرات والخمور والبغاء والفساد والمحسوبية وكل السلبيات التي يرفضها الدين الإسلامي الحنيف

ماذا يعني ذلك؟ يعني ببساطة ان زيادة التدين ليست ظاهرة دينية حقيقية.. بل هي سياسية وشكليات مزيفة وليست حقيقية وإلا كيف نفسر ازدياد الغش في الشركات التي تدعي التدين والعلاج الاسلامي.. كان آخرها العسل المغشوش الذي يصلح لكل الأمراض.. الذي اكتشفت مختبرات الدولة بأنه مغشوش وأخيراً نسأل الدراويش الجدد في القطاع الحكومي أو الخاص ماذا تريدون من الكويت ان تكون بإغلاقكم كل مظاهر البهجة في المجتمع.. ما الغرض من إغلاق البلد ودروشة المجتمع؟.. يعني تماماً ان هدفكم المعلن هو أسلمة القوانين والمجتمع تمهيداً للوصول للسلطة لكن لماذا تحاولون تحويل الكويت الى دولة طالبان جديدة هل تريدونها ان تكون مكاناً لتفريخ الارهابيين الجدد للجهاد في الفلوجة من الشباب الكويتي الذين تحاولون منعهم من دخول دور السينما!؟

إذا كان من فارق يرجح أحدهما على الآخر فهو ان جون كيري يعرف أكثر من جورج بوش عن الشرق الأوسط, وكل قضية أخرى. وليس هذا صعباً, فجورج بوش الذي تخرج من كلية التجارة في جامعة هارفارد, وجلس في مجالس ادارة شركات كيري, لم يستفد من الدراسة أو "البزنس" ولم يفد أحداً, فهو بقي في شبه غيبوبة, بين خمر وغيره, حتى سنة 1985 عندما كان عمره 39 عاماً, وأحرج والديه في حفلة عامة واستعان الأب, وكان نائباً للرئيس ريغان, بالمبشر بيلي غراهام, فأخذ هذا الابن الى دروس دين, ووجد الابن ما يريد فأصبح مسيحياً متجدداً, وانتقل من العبث الى التطرف الديني

وهل هذا قدرنا نحن الكويتيين أيضاُ؟ ما أكثر السرسرية والشباب الصايعين الذين اكتشفوا دينهم وربهم بعد ما تشبعوا من حياة الوناسة، وانتقلوا أيضاً من العبث الى التطرف الديني وغدوا أكثر غلواً وتطرفاً في تديّنهم من شعب الكويت المحافظ بالفطرة، حتى أصبحوا نواب في مجلس الأمة يفتون وينهرون ويزجرون بخلق الله يومياً، يحرّمون لغيرهم ما أحلّوه لأنفسهم أيام الصبا

Absentee Voting

A newsflash across the TV screens last night said that NASA astronauts voted for their choice of president from outer space! I couldn't get that image out of my mind, and whether Bush or Kerry wins (and sadly, it's looking like Bush) you can't help but admire democracy at its greatest.

I've always wondered how come Kuwaiti citizens who live or work abroad are not allowed to vote at our embassies around the world using an absentee ballot, and what's the logic behind denying our armed forces the right to vote as well?

Today's The Day

America will choose its next president today. Some claim that for us Arabs, it doesn't really matter who wins. Some - especially in Kuwait - want Bush to win because he's الغالي ولد الغالي, applying our backward tribal mentality to American elections. Oh wait, I forgot that's how we vote here...

Many Arabs also want Kerry to win, especially after Bush's monumental disaster in Iraq. Getting rid of Saddam Hussein was a great achievement, but the daily bloodbath in Iraq is anything but. 100,000 Iraqi civilians have died since the war. That is much too high a price and if Kerry wins, he will have the unenviable task of cleaning up that mess.

A lot of Kuwaitis object to Kerry because he voted against sending troops to kick Saddam Hussein out of Kuwati in 1990. I personally don't care about that at all, because when he voted that way it was not out of direct malice or hatred towards Kuwait but out of concern for the US troops and the cost of war etc., all legitimate concerns... The sooner we realize that the world does not revolve around us, the easier it will be for us to understand how the world works.

I prepped myself for the election by watching Fahrenheit 9/11 yesterday afternoon (finally!). How anyone can vote for Bush after seeing that movie is beyond comprehension. I personally found it a little over the top, and uncomfortable in some parts. But what really made my blood boil is how the 2000 elections were literally stolen. I'm no fan of Al Gore, but if this is how the USA conducts its elections, then what hope do we have? More nightmare stories are emerging daily and many predict another extended showdown in Florida, or possibly Ohio, just like last time. At the rate they're going, by 2008 they will need UN election monitors at every polling station!

Many informed Americans feel that history will remember Bush as the worst president they've ever had. Certainly, he's the most polarizing president ever. Whereas, in the past, most Americans couldn't really get that worked up for or against any president, Bush has created an atmosphere of rabid hatred from his opponents and over-zealous adoration from his fans. That can't be healthy in any democracy, least of all in the country that holds itself as a shining example.

So, not that anyone really cares what I think, Kuwait Unplugged officially endorses John Kerry for President because there's no way he will be worse than Bush, and because I need a break from seeing and hearing Bush on TV!!

And just like Oscar night, we won't know the results till tomorrow morning!

Et Tu KNCC?

قرار شركة السينما الكويتية بإغلاق جميع دور العرض لمدة 10 أيام حتى عيد الفطر بمناسبة "العشر الأواخر" لا يمكن وصفه إلا بالسخافة والجبن وانعدام المنطق. تفاءلنا خيراً بإدارة الشركة الجديدة الشابة والتي وضعت لمسات إيجابية كثيرة على مفهوم الذهاب إلى السينما في الكويت، فأين دور السينما الحديثة من دور سينما الأمس مثل الأندلس والحمراء وغرناطة "مالوت أول"؟ نعلم أن لا حول ولا قوة لها ازاء مقص الرقابة الحكومي الطالباني الذي يبتر الأفلام ويفرغها من مضمونها، لكن الحلو ما بيكملش

السؤال للإدارة الجديدة أو لمن "خرّعها" ونصحها... ما الذي يحرم مشاهدة الأفلام في العشر الأواخر بالذات؟ وإذا كانت السينما حرام في العشر الأواخر أليس من المنطق أن تكون حرام طوال الشهر الفضيل؟ وإذا كانت حرام في رمضان، بعد كملوا جميلكم وحرموا السينما طول السنة علشان تكمل ديرة الحلال والحرام!؟

الله يسامحكم يا شركة السينما، وانشاءالله سهمكم يخفس أول ما يفتح السوق

I will not even attempt to find any logic or reason behind the latest government stunt, simply because there ain't none!

That said, how will you spend your KD 200 when you get your grubby hands on it? Most creative answer gets a prize to be determined later, after the shock has worn off.

!أحسن من اللي أردى منكم

إعلان كبير في صحف اليوم لحكومة دبي تهنيء به نفسها لحيازتها المركز الأول بين الدول العربية في الشفافية ومحاربة الفساد، وبيئة الاقتصاد الكلي، وإدارة المؤسسات العامة، والتقدم التكنولوجي، وتنافسية قطاع الأعمال، ومناخ العمل المحلي، واستراتيجيات وإدارة قطاع الأعمال، ومستوى التنافسية في الأسواق العالمية

نحن بدورنا لا يسعنا إلا أن نهنيء حكومة دبي على تحقيق هذه الإنجازات مع تذكيرها أن مجال المنافسة بينها وبين الدول العربية الشقيقة شبه معدوم أي بالكويتي الفصيح "أحسن من اللي أردى منهم"، لكن مع ذلك ندعو الله أن يوفقنا لنوصل مواصيلهم

كلما ذكر احد دبي وتحسّر على أحوالنا، غالباً ما يكون الكلام سطحي جداً حيث لا هم للغالبية سوى المنتجعات والبارات. أنا شخصياً لا أحسد دبي على هذه الأشياء لأنها متوفرة في كل مكان (وغالباً بذوق أفضل)، لكن لا بد من الإعجاب بإنجازات دبي التحارية والإقتصادية التي أصبحت حديث العالم، ولا يمكن لأي عاقل أن يتجاهلها

ولابد أيضاً أن نتساءل: شفينا إحنا؟؟ أعلم تماماً أنه لايوجد في دبي نظام سياسي ولا دستور ولا مجلس أمة أعوج يقف نوابه حجر عثرة في وجه التقدم والتطور بدل من المطالبة بهما، ويرى الأمور من منظور الحلال والحرام.... لكن يبقى بالنهاية أن السلطة في دبي وضعت لنفسها خطة والتزمت بتنفيذها، وهذا هو كل ما في الأمر

السلطة هنا بيدها أن تغير الكثير وتنجز المستحيل لكن يبدو أن الأمور عاجبتها كما هي. والا أنا غلطان؟

My God, it's already November? كله من أعمارنا !!

Anyway, sorry for the delay but I've been hooked watching "24" Season 3 on DVD.. This week's playlist, in keeping with the constant hunger of Ramadan, has a food theme:

1. Ice Cream - Sarah McLachlan: "Your love is better than ice cream.." Uh, sorry Sarah babe... Once I get my hands on a tub of Baskin-Robbins Strawberry Cheesecake, ain't nothing gonna top it!
2. Chocolate - Snow Patrol: If it wasn't for the damn traffic, I'd be at Chocolate Bar every night!
3. Juicy Fruit - Mtume: One of the sexiest, slinkiest, funkiest R&B songs ever recorded. An old school masterpiece. Yummy in every way, even with ridiculous lyrics.
4. Die Young, Stay Pretty - Blondie: OK, no food here but wiser words were never commited to song. "Live fast, 'cause it won't last!" Amen to that!
5. Pursuit of Happiness - Weekend Players: This is one of those calming yet upbeat albums that I fish out every now and then.

Faith Through Fright

Look everbody! It's not just us!!

Just in time for Halloween tomorrow, it seems Christian Fundamentalists have also been using fear and loathing to get wayward lapsed Christians back onto the path of salvation, by scaring the "bejeezus" out of them!

Check out their Haunted Mansion, where "pilgrims" go to have their wits scared out of them and learn what happens to them after they die, just like the عذاب القبر lectures we have here, only they don't teach this stuff to kids in school and they actually charge admission to get in.

People actually pay for this stuff!
